SE of Atsion

I had to go back into the burn twice more. It's fascinating to be out there. I parked on fireline road in two different areas and went in deep.

Some fields of pitch pine had trunks less than 2 inches in diameter. True pitch pine lowland. It needed fire.

My friend Ron (Rooftree) was asking about this road; whether it continued. They piled these huge logs (poles?) at the spot circled. Although the road continues on the other side, it's one of those roads you don't continue on in hot weather; afraid to set something on fire and draw in the heat (pun intended).

There are logs in the water and on the other side you cannot see, but if someone was determined, they'd go around.
This is how it looks on the other side.

When you get into some of the areas you realize how vast they are. And wet.

New sprouts of pine are growing aggresively.

As the heat went through, any moisture (or sap?) under some of the bark would heat to steam and pop
the bark off. This was common to see.

This beaksedge is an S3. Odd to see only one.

We then traveled down to the logs. The dark blue line running across is the exact line between Shamong and Washington Townships.

By the way, I stepped up to what I'm 90% sure is a charcoal mound. It had a runnel all around the base. When you look at Boyd's lidar, they seem to be all over this area.

This was my way out Guy from that blockage. I looked like a coal miner.

That huge deer blind in your satellite image was there near those logs in September or beginning of October.

It wasn't there in August and the satellite image was before that. I stood at the spot with my GPS in my hand and I was right over it.

Speaking of that, let's try to name that area. There has to be a unique name for it in some literature, and I'm not sure the 'great swamp' really fits.

I'm speaking of this area below, and I can't see any bogs that would flood this area except the Sleeper Branch at the SW side.

Where is all this water coming from, just rising from the ground? But even so, why all the linear braided channels?

Many maps of that area are wrong. They call Wescoat ... Rockwood. This one has Rockwood correctly mentioned.

I believe I have some answers as I mentioned to you. But I can't find the book right now. I will look tomorrow.

Okay, I'm going with "Atsion Burn Site" based upon this, it's a priority site. It's mentioned in this document under Pitch Pine Lowlands.

Here's where I think they are both the same creek. See how the flow of water, even if underground, goes around this knob of higher ground on the west side of 206.

Maybe it’s coincidence but whenever I saw the bogs off of Jackson Road drain in the spring that whole area is under water for a few weeks after. I actually did the same as you and started looking. It doesn’t seem the bogs drain into that area.

Problem solved. It's all the same system of Sleeper Creek, itself fed by Wildcat Branch, Cooper Branch, and Hay's Mill Creek. Note that the water which builds up against the old railroad bed in the top two arrows simply continues into the Atsion burn area.

I’m not sure why but That knob of land was clear cut back in the early 90’s.
