In my travels through Cumberland County and other areas towards the "Western Shore" I've noticed that a lot of houses have big decorative stars on them. They look like they might be made of metal and range in size from maybe a foot to two feet high. I don't think I've ever noticed more than one star at a time displayed.

Can anyone fill me in on the significance of these? Is it something religious, political, mystical or just decorative? Is it something specific to that area?

I was wondering about that for a couple of years now. Someone reciently told me that someone in the household is in the army (or service?).

Just the current fad.

They are all over my development. Even my mother-in-law has them on her fence. Most of them are patriotic in nature so I believe it is the newest fad as mentioned above. In place of a flag....a star.

Interesting... I never really noticed these before. But some of them are on old historic houses and look like they've been there for awhile...

I like to think of them as a variation of the Pagan Pentegram; Earth, Air, Water, fire, and Spirit; although I realize that is not the owners intentions.....most of the time anyway.:witch: They are indeed just like Barn Stars, although I've equated it with just popular adornment. I've seen them all over the Delaware Valley, just like lawn sheep in the late 80's. As I high schooler we sure had some mischief with those things.:jd: Just got to see a bunch of Amish Hex art a couple of weeks ago, that is some great artwork with a variety of meanings in history....its good stuff.
