Skink

[Teegate]

We were driving down Carranza Road this morning and Jessica started yelling for me to stop. I slammed on the brakes and a dust cloud enveloped us and we had the windows down. I should have stopped slower. Anyway, we ran back up the road and she found it right where she saw it. I came close to running it over.

I don't know how she saw it.

Earlier I was photographing Twayblade and this came crashing down next to me. I honestly think it is dead and it happened right next to me.

That's absolutely remarkable eyesight! The ground skink (Scincella lateralis) is skittish and a tough one to observe overall. I usually see the end of the tail as they scurry down into the leaf litter, yet she sees one basking on a sand road from a moving vehicle! Can she come with me on my next herping outing?

I tried to see it in the video but could not. Check out the dust cloud that also came in the car when I stopped fast.
