Snakes

Long time no see guys.
So took the kids out last Saturday for an adventure with my Brother, was a great day and found a redbelly, 2 small kings and a lifer for me, worm snake, very excited. So my brother and I want to spy a Rough Green Snake which are allegedly common. Other than accidentally having one cross our path along a road do we just pause and stare into shrubbery along waterways in the hope of spotting one ?
Another thing, been flipping since I was in second grade and always thought what was under it was a passerby during the night, been reading others don't flip their usual's except every couple weeks, is it of the general opinion that they are homes rather than temporary shelter ?

What's the difference between rough and smooth green snake? I guess it is obvious, but a green was always a green to me. The ones I found were always uplands and quite by accident.

Same here Ed. I usually find them in early spring before the vegetation builds. After that they are hard to see unless they move.

The Rough green snakes have keeled scales . They are found basically south of 195 . The smooth green does not have keeled scales . They both live in similar habitat , but the smooth greens are very common in the mountainous regions of PA ( As well as No Jersey ) . For some reason , the smooth green is also more likely to be found under rocks , etc . while the rough green is usually found foraging in bushes , usually close to water .Teegate's observation is right on : after vegetation turns , very hard to spot . Hope this helps .
