Looked it up. I think its an Earth Snake, genus Virginia, one of the snakes commonly called worm snakes.

Bob I thought they were curly grass fertile fronds sticking up in the first pic? what are they???clubmoss?

That is Lycopodiella caroliniana Al, a very distinctive club moss. It is recognizable by the leaves on the ground and by it's slim, compact profile. It is not seen as often as most of the other club mosses in the pines.
