On my recent visit to the Pines, four members of this Forum patiently answered my questions, provided reference material, and took me to visit lovely and unique places. I am grateful for their kindness.

A beaver. I was standing on a dike in the bog admiring his lodge, just at dusk, and he swam by. I almost fell in. A moment later he disappeared, but his mate came by, saw me, and slapped his tail. First time I've ever heard that great thunking splash.

I'm a olfactorist, so as I looked at your glorious photos I suddenly had the urge to run outside and grab a handful of red cedar, crush the "leaves" in my hands, cup them together and breathe in as I scrolled some more (that's not easy) to help stimulate my olfactory senses which felt a huge disconnect at the onset because of ocular overload. Does that make sense? My auditory senses felt completely left out. Thanks for the journey.

It makes perfect sense. I'm fascinated that you're an olfactorist. No wonder you like to cook. It's a mixed blessing though, isn't it? Thank you for the kind words.

Thank you. I bought a new compact for traveling--it's a Fuji Finepix f200 EXR, and I have been pleased with it.

But more important, I have an excellent teacher. He's taught me to take plenty of shots (more than 5G this trip), to crop, and to slice. Much more to learn!

Snow-bunting crocus shine in the midst of refuse and ruins. The hands that set these corms into soil are long since gone, but the blooms return each year to speak of spring and joys to come.
