I know the feeling...I feel that way about my current focus, Cumberland Furnace. There is a whole town there awaiting excavation.
So many places in the pines are like that...the mystery of history...quite an allure yes?

Well, I think it's a worth another look. Al, if you want to go check the area out on Sunday, I could make it down early in the morning. If anyone else wants to come along, the more pairs of eyes, the better. :)

I was actually hoping to get out there early Sunday, I just have to leave early for Kristen's recital. We can be there by 9 or so.
Where do you want to meet?

Yeah, so far I have back to back snow up here. Half a foot thus far. But roads should be clear by Sunday. How is it down there, Alfonso? Renee, weather allowing, 9AM sounds fine with me.

Well if I come along on the outing and someone gets hurt, you're in luck. I'm a New Jersey State Certified Emergency Medical Technician with 17 years under my belt, plus I have taken a Wilderness First Aid course.

Ooops. Not a fireman. Just raised among firemen.

OK, so we'll stretch it a bit...after all, Joe is going to be lighting fires, with the prescribed burning program, lol!

Very cool!
I have my professional CPR, AED certification (automatic external defibrillator) and first aid, but that looks like nothing next to you!
I was very disappointed in the Red Cross first aid training course. I need to take a wilderness course, like you. Once upon the time the Red Cross used to actually teach something in the first aid course, but now it essentially just teaches you to stabilize a victim until the EMTs get there--since most people are so close to help, there isn't much need to teach splints or things like that. I'd like to have that background for when I'm in the Pines, especially when I am alone, as I frequently do 8 or 10 mile hikes alone. I did have a first aid course years ago, but so much has changed, and things they used to recommend you to do they now recommend you not do, like the whole snake bite thing.
Where did you take your wilderness first aid course?
I've been trying to get into a wilderness survival course too, but the PPA's course keeps being postponed because of low enrollment. I am hoping that the winter date in February holds. I know about Tom Brown's school, and have several of his books, but I wasn't really wanting to go that route for a couple of reasons. I spend too much time out, and not always with other people, and really should have some first hand practical experience. What I do find frustrating is that when I want to go backpacking alone I get so many comments from people worrying about me because of being female. One of these days I'm gonna climb Mt Kilamanjaro all by myself, lol!

Renee,
The Wilderness First Aid class I took was offered up in New Hampshire, I took it when I was involved with the Search and Rescue. As far as using splints, if something is broken, you splint, it doesn't matter where you are. I work as a paid EMT, if I go to someone's house and they have a broken arm, I splint it there in the house before I load and go to the Hospital, that is standard protocol. In the wilderness class, they show you how to use what you have in the woods, ie: tree branches as splints etc, it was a very good class. If you want, I'll keep my eyes open for a class as I read all of the Trade Journals. I know of a Wilderness First Aid training site that is located next to the Delaware Water Gap, I'll keep my eyes open for an address or web address for you.
