Sweetwater Church

I collect old fishing photographs but will sometimes buy others that just appeal to me. I found this 1907 picture postcard on ebay but it went for more than I was willing to pay for. The caption read "Sweetwater Church built 1808 Plesant Mills, NJ" . It was postmarked Sept. 16, 1907 at Hammonton, NJ with additional postmarks on Sept 17 at New Egypt, NJ and Cassville, NJ. Note that "Pleasant" is misspelled.

Am I correct in assuming that this is the Batsto-Pleasant Mills United Methodist Church ?

JerseyGenesis:

Yes, that is, indeed, the Batsto-Pleasant Mills Methodist Church. It was constructed in 1808 and its cemetery hold members of the Richards family as well as cast bog iron grave markers.

I suspect you encountered an avid post card purchaser on ebay that usually bids enough to get what he wants to enhance his collections! :ninja: :ninja: :ninja:

For another historic post card view of the church and the cemetery, look here:

Sorry about the post card, my friend!

Best regards,

Interesting pics! I've been getting into collecting postcards myself lately. It sure beats the expense and space my waterfowl decoy collection has cost me. I started with cards featuring local railroads and lifesaving stations, spurred by a couple of PowerPoint presentations I was putting together for work. But it is obviously addictive and I’ll pick up anything featuring local history if it is affordable. I’ve never done the E-Bay thing though. I imagine it’s for the best, lest I end up being featured on that reality show about people with cluttered houses. :)

Post Cards

German:

Post cards are a wonderful and visual way to enjoy local history. While I still pursue the commercially printed cards when they will fill a gap in my collection, I am particularly keen to purchase real photo cards, which often show scenes and subjects not given to large-scale commercial printing. Production of real photo cards generally did not exceed 100 of any given card and often the run was 10 or less. It is one reason the real photo bring a premium price. The post card craze of the early twentieth century ended when World War I broke out and the publishers ceased imported the high-quality chromo-litho cards from Germany. American printers picked up the slack—albeit with somewhat inferior printing methods—but, by then, the craze of mailing out post cards yielded to by then ubiquitous Brownie camera. People still bought and mailed post cards, but not with the fervor of the initial craze.

Jerseyman

Well, I hope that collector enjoys the postcard ! I appreciate the link to the other postcards you have of the the church.

I did pick up this postcard a couple of weeks ago of the New Gretna House.

Very nice, JerseyGenesis! I remember looking at that card, but I thought I recalled having it, so I did not bid. It turns out I do not hold that card in my collection, but I am glad that you acquired it!

Here is a real photo card from Green Bank I purchased from ebay:

It appears an early automobile has stopped in town, bringing a collection of gawkers out of the houses.

My first guess without looking further is: Betty Jane Crowley's home across from Hattie Ford's store (Matt's Pizza).
There are a few homes built in this same style along River Road in Green Bank, each possessing their own bit of unique architecture. Presently there is no porch or ornate woodwork on the home. Maybe you can trace the plate on the vehicle and find the owner..... :) (no, nevermind.....you probably could!) Thank you as always for sharing your cool stuff.

I was going to ride around that area and find that house. So maybe by the weekend one of us can find it.
