Here's an interesting structure off the Batona Trail traveling north out of Carranza just after the first bridge.

Nice find Ed! I found one in the middle of the woods about a mile from the ruins of the old fire tower on the road to the Forked River Mountains.

looks like the frame work for a thatch teepee but the ribs aren't close enough together and there is no good thatch materials in the barrens other then a little turkeybeard.looks like their trying to just make a pine clad wikiup instead.won't keep em dry but will make some shade.good shelter for the summer when it's not raining.

They started to overlay it with cedar but didn't finish, no signs of a camp. It is too small to lie down in streched out and it is definitley not a survival shelter, which there is several south of APH.

Here I was thinking I was probably the only person who couldn't see the word "Teepee" without thinking of John Mahalchick. Years ago, and I mean like 40 or 45 years, I was "joy riding" around Gloucester and Salem counties, and came across a fence in a very rural (back then most of it was rural, but this was very rural) area which was lined with signs accompanied by crude illustrations. It was a lengthy rant about opression, and being forced to live in bomb shelters during WWII with no food or water and the violation of the basic rights of people only it wasn't clear who was the opressor and who they were oppressing. It just occurred to me that if I put a large sign on my lawn outlining my objections with the current culture i"d probably get citations from several local munical departments telling me to take it down or else.

what then? a deer blind?.i just noticed they built it around a tree.i thought the pine was an attempt at covering it.don't know why they woud build it around a tree.that kind of defeats the shelter idea, like you said no room.
I built a large thatch teepee five times that size once but it was a teepee with no pole in the middle.thatched it with reeds.

No, it isn't built around a tree, it just looks that way because of a larger stick on the other side. The floor is clear. There was a poor attempt to thatch it with cedar.
