I like ExpertGPS for the PC. You can plot your routes and waypoints on a USGS or aerial background and then load them into your GPS. I store all my waypoints, routes and tracks for later use. It’s easy to copy and paste data to other files so you upload only the data you need in the field. And of course you can print out a map with your waypoints, etc. on the topo map or aerial.

I’ve tried a few free programs but have found this one easiest to use. It’s been the best $60 I’ve spent for all the use I get out of the program. I’m thinking of purchasing the GIS pack that’s available.
