Cumberland--Steve, there is a bottle picture in there that is similar to a couple bottles that you found. It's hard to tell by the pic, but it has that slightly prismatic rainbow oil-slick look to the glass in the light, like the ones you had found. Alan Mounier told me that is a result of the particular chemicals used in making the glass, and that indicates it to be an older bottle.

Wow, it looks like they took down both mill buildings at Heritage. That makes me really sad.

I remember that night as being one of the most fun times that I have ever had. Unfortunately the friend that I was with that night got involved with some girl and doesn't talk to anyone anymore. I always look back on that night as one of the best times in our friendship. It's a shame that those buildings are gone. Oh well, gotta put up more houses...

Great article, Ben. Sucks how that goes with things changing. There are some places I won't visit and some books I won't read ever again. I'd soon as just keep the memory rather than revisit it and risk ruining it.

When you were back there, did you recall any odd smells? I think we all noticed it the other day. And, uh, radioactive waste residue. Delightful. What'd you get us into, Renee? :wink:

The ruins of the dry mill are pretty odd. There's a pool of water in the middle of them with a cement staircase leading out of it. The sky reflected off the water, lending it a stark blue color. Kind of reminded my girlfriend of a Dali painting--minus melting clocks and various objects hanging from the sky, I suppose.

No - we didn't notice any weird smells. I remember before they started the cleanup of the site that there was a ton of radioactive waste that was buried inside a pit that was fenced off with chain link and razor wire. It was pretty weird.

The other weird thing was the water in Crystal Lake always had an oily sort of feel to it. That might have something to do with all of the cars that were dumped in it though.

I noticed as well. All of the kids wanted to play on that huge dirt pile, to run up it, but we wouldn't let them. We were afraid of what might be in the pile.

It was an interesting place, though I don't think I'd go back again. I remembered seeing some fascinating pics from your photos, Ben, and when we drove past the entrance I couldn't resist a peek.

I know Megan really enjoyed poking around there; I told her if she weren't careful she'd get bit by the ghosttowning bug and be out there with us all of the time. She laughed, and seemed to think that might be fun.

Around what year? What I remember about Crystal Lake as a kid was that it lived up to its name. Perfectly clear water to the bottom, I used to wade far out into it. Never noticed any sunk cars when we took the boat out on it.

Cars were dumped there ever since the place shut down. It wasn't unusual to drive around the lake and see an overturned, burned car. One night I went out there and saw one burning.

Maybe we're thinking of different lakes. You certainly couldn't wade far out into this lake. The lake would drop off and go deep real quick. I literally almost lost my old Jeep in there. My driver's side was out of the water, but the passenger side was full of water up to the seat cushon. I was in neck high water attaching tow straps to the truck to get it pulled out.
