WILDFIRE UPDATE River Road Wildfire - Washington Twp, Burlington County
75 acres - 0% contained
30 structures threatened Road closures: Rt 542 (from Wading River Bridge
and Lovers Lane), Old Church Road & River Road
Oh boy, I know someone who lives on River Road. I hope it misses that home.
Every house has a firetruck assigned to protect it.
Al, didn’t realize I typed that in but you read my mind! We stopped at that spot last Saturday and nothing was calling but it was during the day. There was enough water there though which was good.

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Red Flag
Warning for gusty winds and low relative humidity, which is in
effect from 11 AM this morning to 8 PM EDT this evening.
* AFFECTED AREA...Sussex, Warren, Morris, Hunterdon, Somerset,
Middlesex, Western Monmouth, Eastern Monmouth, Mercer, Salem,
Gloucester, Camden, Northwestern Burlington, Ocean,
Cumberland, Atlantic, Cape May, Atlantic Coastal Cape May,
Coastal Atlantic, Coastal Ocean and Southeastern Burlington.
* TIMING...11 AM to 8 PM today.
* WINDS...West to northwest 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.
* RELATIVE HUMIDITY...As low as 20 to 30 percent.
* TEMPERATURES...In the 60s.
* IMPACTS...The combination of dry conditions, low humidity, and
gusty winds will result in favorable conditions for the rapid
spread of fires this afternoon.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now, or will shortly due to a combination of
strong winds, low relative humidity, and dry fuels. Any fires
that develop may quickly get out of control and become difficult
to contain.

Accuweather says 1/2 to 1" rain saturday night. If it peters out before it comes down, that's trouble.
We’ve had very wet springs the past several years. I can’t even remember her the last dry spring. Up until last summer even the summers have been relatively wet. That’s a lot of fuel build up for fires.
Very wet? I don't think so. Fluctuting about the mean maybe. Check Mount Holly.
Ok very wet wasn’t quite the right wording. I was only going by memory also. With the exception of last year, March has been above average in rainfall for NJ since 2016 and last year April and May more then made up for it. Fire wise we’ve been relatively wet for peak forest fire season for several years. We’ve been trending down since last summer and if it wasn’t for some tropical systems in September we would be in much worse shape.
To be fair in this conversation, from, like 2018 to 2020 or so, I recall whining about there being no real springs anymore. Seems we jump right into summer after April rains. But, you know, I have no special perceptive ability, I've just grown into a cranky old man in some situations.
Yeah, that's showing our age for sure. The last bad one I recall is 2012. Seemed like I was driving in to work on an ice rink the whole time. It was not the heavy snow, but the periodic snows and wetness and freezing. I just looked it up. It could have been this one. Cool thing Wiki does.

I'm really watching this weekend with interest. Looks like the possibility of 3 or more inches of rain overall, which would be good news.
