Weymouth Ruins

Well, after 15+ years of running around the woods, I finally made it to Weymouth. As I was poking around one of the raceways I saw what appeared to be a metal axle of some sort in the water. Does anybody know if this was the axle to the water wheel?

Doesn't appear to be an axle, as it is clamped down. Perhaps a skid?
