Wharton Wheelin'

Most of my wheelin' in Wharton is done within the following boundries:

- south of RT-70.
- north of RT-542.
- east of RT-206.
- west of RT-539.

My question is, what's available west of RT-206 for off-roading/wheeling, still being contained in Wharton? If I refer to my Garmin CS and Topo software, everything west of RT-206 appears to be residential.

There is no wheelin' to be done west of 206 within Wharton.
:D
Seriously, take a close look at the 7.5 minute Atsion and Hammonton Quads.
Pay no attention to your software.

The whole area around Parkdale is a good place to go. Iron Bridge is a nice spot too. There is a nasty trail back there that I was sure my old Grand Cherokee wasn't going to make it through.

Yeah. I am all for the Wharton Cleanup, but it seems like every thread now has people posting about it.

I don't mind my site being a soapbox, but lets try to not be obnoxious about it.

Edit: And I care about the Pines, but I'd rather do the FRM cleanup...

Everyone better be there. If you care about the pines you will be at the largest clean up it has.

I will not be there. I have to agree with Ben.

Just because some people think this is the event of the year, doesn't mean that I and others did not have previous plans for our precious days in October. I applaud everyones good intentions on this, but one must realize that some of us have other things going on. I hope it is a big success.... it looks like you will have a perfect day for it.

Well I guess I will continue with the hi-jack of this thread.
I was very disappointed last year with the lack of support of the cleanup from members of this board.
One day a year can be easily set as a priority.
I have a special bias towards Wharton because I live here. I would venture to say that I spend more time in this woods than most of the members, as I hunt here, fish here and walk 3 miles a day in these woods about 320 out of 365 days a year, rain or shine.
I started hunting these woods in 1968 with my father and I can never remember a time when there was so much shit dumped in so many places.
There are a lot of members here that spend their weekends hugging the trees and enjoying the critters who see a lot of the results of the dumping that goes on.
At the very least, try to show up on Sunday morning and give some locations of some of the garbage to someone in charge so that it can be taken care of.

I'll hijack once again, what the hell. Is 4 wheel drive a requirement for the cleanup? I have a 2WD S10 which I'd be more than happy to fill up with junk, but I don't want to be a burden to everyone else by constantly getting stuck either. I haven't been to Wharton in quite a while, and I don't really know where the cleanup will be taking place. Will there be places to pick up junk where I won't be getting stuck in sugar sand/slop every 5 feet?

Otherwise I could borrow my uncle's 'Yoda. I love bouncing around the sand roads in that thing...

You do not need 4 WD if you know some of the hard packed roads and avoid some of the slop holes.
Largo from this site does the cleanup with a 2WD S-10.
Roads like Quaker Bridge Road, Hampton Furnace Road, Sandy Causeway off of Chew Road, are all navigable with 2WD.
If you hook up with a group at the sign-ups at the ranger station they usually try and stick together in the woods and help each other out.
I will be there with red F-350 4WD and I usually park right at the highway along the driveway into the parking lot. I have a 30' strap and chain with me so I can help you if need be.
Largo has a gold S-10.
Getting unstuck is half the fun.

Tree Huggers!

Now Redneck, you owe me a beer over that one. My post to pinebarrenjeepster was both a bit of innocent needling as well as a defensive posture by me. And I realize his was part needling and part cajoling, with a dash of braggadocio thrown in. When he said "better be there" and "largest in the pines" my heart sunk when I thought about all the time and energy the Forked River Mountain Coalition has sunk into their cleanup over the years, and Bayville is maybe 5 miles from the mountain as the crow flies. But, more on that cleanup (and whether those who attend it care about the pines) in a later post by me.

I did not say specifically I would not be there. I had been considering it seriously. If my daughter does not need a ride back to Rowan I will be there if I can get another board member to ride shotgun in my truck. I don't like being in the big bad woods alone. A wolf might get me.

How about some homemade wine instead Bob?
The juice is done working now and will be ready in about 3 more weeks. It makes tree hugging more tolerable. :D
I conversed with you briefly on here last year about getting up to the FRM's. Its an area I know nothing about. If the clay pits off of 72 are part of the area then I was there in the early 80' but I don't remember hilly terrain.
My wife and I need to hook up with you this fall or winter and get a poorman's guided tour of the area
I would be happy to help with that cleanup too.

Hopefully everyone will have a great weekend, I hear the weather is with us all!! Of course people have plans, it is a wonderful season.

JEEPSTER.... More flies with honey dude. This is an easy site with easy people. I just think the demanding tone struck a couple nerves.

The FRM cleanup... good to know the same values exist in other regions.

NASCAR, With regard to the original thread, I am a creature of habit and Geography so Wharton is my region. I am not sure where you define your line between flat out wheelin and a little walking and such but I really do have a nice time by wheel or foot out my way and through to ELM and up towards Atsion on the Westerly side of 206. There are some very traversable "jeep" trails.
I am sure with some assistance of the site and it's many threads and some random wandering of your own you will find it has many riches to offer, which is why there is a clear bias by some here to keep it free of neglect, trashing, and vandalism. In my humble opinion, Wharton really represents the heart and soul of the pines. while I could not claim as much woods time logged as REDNEKF350, believe me I would like to. It's a great and rich region.

BADFISH, tread lightly, don't get stupid or too brazen and your S10 will do quite nicely. Trust me.

Thanks Largo. I was starting to think my original question got lost in all the clean-up discussion. I agree with the "nice time west of 206" statement. Those boundries I mentioned in my 1st post are where I'm usually hanging-out each Saturday (sometimes Sunday too). The concept of the clean-up is a great one, however I prefer picking-up each and every time I'm out. There isn't a weekend that's gone by where I haven't come back with soda/beer/wine bottles, trash, etc that weren't my own. An organized event such as this is good to meet folks you've pinged over the months/years on the boards, but I don't feel it should the only time someone should be inclined to pickup a piece of trash or two. Don't get me wrong....... when I wheel on Saturday's, it's not my intent to gather trash. I'm out for the wheelin' and discovery of new places aspects. It just so happens rather than passing a bottle or can on the trail, it's just as easy to get out and throw it in the back of the truck.

I'll take you up on the wine. I have grown quite fond of it. And I'll be your poorman guide. Perhaps when the wine is ready.

peace.....
