What's left?

1.1 million acres, roughly, with a constant struggle to keep the development down....

Do the Dwarf Forests still exist?

You can get a nice view on RT72 just before entering Woodland Twsp. as the highway is elevated in some spots.

It was an amazing site on my first drive in that area.

It amazes me ever time I head there. I think it is one of my favorite places in the pines...kind of feel like Gulliver in Lilliput...

The best view there is just off of 72 next to Coyle Field. It is a very short walk from 72, or you can drive there easily. There is a sign there telling you it is restricted so you go in at your own risk.

This photo does not do it justice.

Is that strange store still there? The one on RT72 that sold *Island Type stuff*

They go to Florida for the winter, but they return in the spring. I have not been down there in the past weeks to see if they are back.

Is that the tiki place? I rode by there today...noticed a new billboard right before it for Deborah for cancer....how I hate billboards in the middle of the Pines. :(

It's there again, and they have their palm trees planted again- real ones.

Tiki Murph is the palm tree guy on rt. 72. He goes to Florida every October and returns to NJ in May. I only know that from reading the little signs that he props up along the roads edge. My husband and son stopped in there a few years ago.

Oh, it's his last name! Thanks for clearing my confusion, lol!

I just finished a book titled "The Pine Barrens" written in 69. Just looking around to see how much of this land is left.

Since you have just read the book and it is fresh on your mind, you may be interested in this. Here is an article in Barry's Gallery on Bill Wasovwich who you may remember as the shy young man who hung around with Fred Brown. You can click on the photo to enlarge it for easier reading.

Also, in the first paragraph of the book, McPhee is in the Bear Swamp Fire Tower, and here is an article I wrote on that.

Well, thanks to this new post, I'm reading the book all over again and not reading the new books. :(
