Has anyone driven from Bear Swamp Hill to Oswego Lake? The road there has a really bad puddle was “police” tape across the road with warnings to not go down it. It appears someone has gone through the tape.

And Stephenson Road (red road) also has a deep puddle.

Talk about deep puddles.....if any one goes to Crosley (off RT 530) there is a deep puddle towards the end of the road. I went dead ahead through the middle of it with my F150 4x4 (there wasn't much room around either side) and the water was just about over my hood. So definately go around it if you can. Especially if you have a car.
 
This is not a good time to be out there alone in any vehicle and take chances. I came to a few in my car on roads I am familiar with that looked innocent but were not.

I mentioned getting stuck near Oswego Lake (it happened a couple of months back) on the "Stuck!" thread; it was in a deep hole on the road to Bear Swamp Hill from the lake (as a matter of fact, it might have been in the first puddle encountered). I'd taken this road several times previously, but the hole was obviously worse than I'd remembered. I'm bad with road names in the barrens, but, after escaping, I then proceeded along the road adjacent to the lake and veered onto the next sand road which cuts back over to the road to Bear Swamp Hill. The road was fine from there.

Yea, that has to be the place that was bad on Saturday. It looks like someone did not escape.

I was out walking on a little sand road today and saw a big puddle with what looked like a little two-rung ladder sticking straight up from of it. I thought that was odd, so I grabbed the ladder to pull it out and it was much heavier than I expected. Turned out to be about a five foot ladder that went deep into the mud. I guess at one point someone used it as a makeshift "bridge" to drive across and one end got pushed down into the mud. But I'm glad I didn't try to walk through that puddle - it would have swallowed me up!
 
Wish it would just stay cold and those damn puddles would freeze over! They used to...
(it'll get cold by Wednsday, but then possibly 60s and 70s by Monday!)

That was good of you to pull that ladder out. When people get stuck and leave stuff of that nature in the mud hole it can cause problems for someone else going through the mud hole. Or be very dangerous for a motorcyclist.

I know that one Firetech. You are right, its an unassuming monster. I have been known to park right before it and walk into Crossley from there, even in my toyota pickup. There is not much of a go-around.
 
I know this is slightly off topic but does anyone know why certain trails get the humps. The ones that just go up and down and up and down. I know theres a reason and im sure someone here knows it. Thanks

Well, in general that is caused by vehicle traffic. Like the moguls on a ski run once they get started they tend to grow, as the oscillations of whatever heavy thing is going by push more material out of the troughs and up onto the shoulder of the next mound. For skiers it's more deliberate, but the analogy is there.

I tend to think, without any real proof, that the worst roads (like the one that follows the old railroad bed east of Forked River Mts.) are created by people driving off-road vehicles on them at speed.

Mike, do you know whats scary? Some enduro and motocross riders ride so fast the tires only hit the tops of those humps. I've seen it, and I know for a fact that crazy guy Woodjin has done it before. He is one wild dude, I swear.

It is a cool trick I like to do when I know my life insurance payments are up to date.:)
 
The mention of those "humps" got me all excited. I always called them whoops and some people call them whoop dee do's (spelling?). I'm more of an ATV guy and yes, even the ATV's can skip across them like motocross bikes. I'll always remember a guy teaching me how to ride across whoops back by Chatsworth. He said put it in third, floor it, put your butt as far back as you can and keep the frontend light. He then added, once you get going, don't stop! It was pretty scary at first but he was right, the faster you go the easier you glide over them. But during an enduro or hare scramble race, whoops can wear you out so fast. Your arms pump up with blood and become useless. So much fun but can also be a painful experience. Haha. Thanks for bringing this up. To me riding in the Pine Barrens and whoops go hand and hand.

I trail ride lightly and quietly nowadays but man, everything you say speaks volumes. That repetition of the back tires just skating across the peaks is awesome if you just keep it up! add some tight trails & close turns and you're glad to be riding flat for awhile afterwards. Good memories.

there is also a huge puddle on railroad rd going towards rockwood. That was my first time ever exploring there, but that was a lake. There were some drive arounds but still some water on those also. Judging by the road i think i could of made it without a problem, but didn't want to chance it, plus i had to start heading out anyway. But does anyone know if that puddle is really deep? Without out using the drive arounds i would say it was 30 feet across and about 50 wide it was more like a lake
 
The puddle by Lake Oswego claimed my van last winter. $2500 and a new transmission and Im good to go! I was there yesterday and it looks like someone is making a mud run out of it. Also, somebody tried to drain it because I saw a ditch dug off to one side.
