Resistance Grows to the New Plan to Close 200 Miles of Roads in Wharton State Forest

Referring to the quote the DEP claims that they “added” 10 miles of road that is not on any topos (which I find hard to believe). Bulldozed road started as a firebreak. Looking at the historic aerials in 1956 it wasn’t there and appeared in the 1963 aerials...

Resistance Grows to the New Plan to Close 200 Miles of Roads in Wharton State Forest

I see it as not bargaining in good faith. Offering us something that we can’t even use. As far as I know the DEP has no intention on fixing up that bridge. I’d be willing to bet the map proponents would push for it to stay closed as well and keep it solely for hiking trails.

Resistance Grows to the New Plan to Close 200 Miles of Roads in Wharton State Forest

I think that the new road is Push line Road. Since it’s not a true road but was a Fireline. Now they want to call it a road and act like they gave us something even though I’ve been driving it nearly my entire life.

It looks like there’s a lot of them too.

    Tar Kiln Locations?

It’s been a few weeks since we’ve been out exploring sites but since the holidays I think we’ve visited 4 or 5. The most recent one we found was here: https://boydsmaps.com/#17.94/39.780465/-74.778337/mbx3dmidatl/-15.99/0.00 I’m not sure exactly why but this one was my favorite so far. The...

Resistance Grows to the New Plan to Close 200 Miles of Roads in Wharton State Forest

One of the statements I keep hearing from those in favor of this map is that 98% of Wharton is no more then a mile hike from an approved road. Thats only if, you count West Mill Road. Everyone here knows it is not connected to any approved route or paved road. Making that statement completely...

Resistance Grows to the New Plan to Close 200 Miles of Roads in Wharton State Forest

I see them occasionally but no where near as many as I see in the WMAs. A month or so ago I saw some flying down Atsion Rd on the pavement in front of the cabins. At least 2 to 3 riders per quad and only 1/2 had helmets. Maybe they didn’t know that was illegal. Surely the new visitor map will...

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

And in that time it gives the DEP time to make the trails that are on the map actually useable

Not to mention which ones that are slated to be open that are either inaccessible or impassable.

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

I am so aggravated the extent that the PPA will go to vilify good any law abiding citizens that don’t agree with their ideas. Blatant deception and lies.

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

No they aren’t currently. But it’s been mentioned several times that there should be areas of Wharton that should be “preserved”. I fear closing off sections of sensitive areas is not to far in the distant future and walking off trail would be prohibited. Walking off trail was the main reason...

I actually removed after a brief discussion I felt it was best not to show the exact location. But all the information that I used to find it is still there

Or it’s a “win win” for both sides. How can he speak for me? The most telling is he feels this plan is “incredibly generous”. If it were up to them all vehicles would be prohibited.

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

Yes those puddles on Buldozed Road (Push Line Road to me) need to be addressed. Over the years just about every road on that current list was impassable at one time or another. I can think of several, right off the top of my head, that were repaired years ago and the only evidence that a...

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

This is apples to oranges. Those parks also allow ATVs and snowmobiles. Should I be pushing for that like other parks do?

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

I noticed Stokes Road. I was curious as to what they saw different between 2015 and a 2023. Why is the section that goes through the wetlands is open and the section that doesn’t is now closed? In 2017 or so that road was repaired well from Hampton Road to the rail line. If that can be done why...
