This afternoon as we drove north on 563 just south of Chatsworth, Ro pointed to the large field south of the Ocean Spray packing plant and said that the field looked like it was covered in cranberries. I said,"No way. Must be some sort of grass." I didn't remember ever seeing that field look...

Coming north on 563 today we were surprised to see about 1/3 of the beaver dam just below the bridge was GONE. The water level was very low; on the north (west?) side of the bridge the water level was as low as we've ever seen it.

WOW!!! Al. did you measure their circumference 4 1/2 feet above ground level? That's a major way the state record trees are listed. Those babies gotta be pushing whatever is on the list. Wish I was able to get down in there but not likely any more..... Many thanks for posting.

Bob, we stopped at the site this evening and for sure it's Sweet Pepperbush/Clethra alnifolia. Thought, wrongly, that their leaves are entire.

Haven't responded sooner as busy outside of botany and took today off so we could go down to Bombay Hook (tons os Avocets, another scarcity than can be found in big numbers in certain spots).

Bob, green serrated (sic?) leaves in the Gentian pix may be Clethra alnifolia but we need to go back for a better look. I had the same question after posting, btw. Gentians were in a very thick mix of plants and surprised me that they found their way to sunlight.
