    Franklin Parker Preserve Foray

Last Saturday Ro and I were part of joint botanical/entomological group visit to FPP. At one point the crowd was inspecting flower species in an area with young, 6 to 7 foot Pitch Pines. I noticed some people photographing shoulder-high "candles" - new growth/inflorescences - on one tree...

    Brendan Byrne/Lebanon SF History

I've heard that Wharton Tract was offered to the state around 1900 at $1.00/acre (!) and the offer was turned down as too expensive. Then the state paid $5.00/cre fifty years later. True? Wonder what those 10K+ acres cost back then ..... johnny b

On Saturday Ro and I were on a Botany/Bug outing at Parker Preserve and I told PBX I was posting my above query. He said he'd bet Teegate would have the answer and he, again, proved he was right on.

    Lichens in Brendan Byrne

Saturday Ro & I enjoyed a morning in Brendan Byrne SF with Karl Anderson, learning how to identify lichens, their various shapes and habitats, etc. Fascinating. We saw lichens on trees, in tree bark crevices, on stone building walls, on concrete sidewalk. Lichens are a combination of a fungus...

    Paradise Lake/Camp Jam

Yesterday Ro and I were driving on US 206 and saw new signs at the Paradise Lake road, so we drove in. Close to the camp entrance there was a lot of grading, tree removal. We drove into the camp, at the little guard house there was a sign "Camp Jam". Much grading, etc., but no new buildings...

Green Bank Inn... closed for good.

lmkms: Many thanks for the very interesting spec sheet. Don't ever, ever lay that baby down - 1675 lbs!! It'd take a tow truck crane to lift it back vertical.

Green Bank Inn... closed for good.

Green Bank inn and Hedger House were on our "we gotta stop in there one of these days" that closed before we did. Remember seeing a V8 motorcycle , NOT a trike, parked out front of the Green Bank Inn one day......

The end of 7 bridges road

Ro & I were there 10 minutes early and there were maybe 25 cars parked along 7 Bridges Rd. We walked in the causeway, there were a number of "manned" card tables in the courtyard with pamphlets, brouchures, etc. The lectures and exhibits were VERY interesting. Pleasure to meet such...

    Unexpected Road

Bob, it runs due west (not northwest as I had thought) from 54 past the Unexpected Refuge towards Blue Bell and Malaga. If its named for the refuge my question moves over to the refuge........

    Unexpected Road

This strangely named road starts on Rte 54 and runs roughly northwest. Anyone have info on why the strange name? Speaking of which, we noticed a street sign in Glamssboro: "No Name Road". That set some kind of a record. There must be an interesting story behind why it got that moniker.

    Spring Ephemerals

Other places have flowers for spring ephemerals; the Pines have flag displays. Photo below was taken on the east side of Chatsworth-Tuckerton Road just east of intersection with Lost Lane. Picture was taken on 20 Mar 2017. There was another of these a bit further east - didn't have means to...

Pickle Factory Pond & Paper Factory Road

While wandering around our favorite NJ area - Delaware Bay shore - we passed over Pickle Factory Pond dam, and noticed the concrete building ruins at the dam and adjacent woods. Was there really a pickle factory there? When? Any other interesting stuff about it? Ro also noticed that the road is...

    Where is this?

Possible solution: plastic pipes with side holes that allow the water in along its length. The pipes are put in below the desired water level. The beavers can't figure out what's happening and counter it. It's been tried on Parker Preserve and seems to work.
