A Pines settlement called "Chicken Bone"?

Welcome to the hunt! I started to poke around on a day I had some free time pop up last minute but it was at the start of the tick and chigger season and I paid the price, even though I should have known better. I decided to renew the search when cooler weather returned. I searched the area to...

New Found(?) Gun Clubs/Cabins in the Pines

I just realized that Mickey and I stopped at that site on an Ocean County Parks hike a few years ago. I noted from the topo map we carried that it was a former gun club site but there was almost a foot of snow on the ground when we were there so it was much less interesting at the time.

That bottle brings back not-so-fond memories of living next to the Squibb plant in New Brunswick during my college years. A west wind always brought unpleasant aromas.

    Crowley's Landing boat ramp Closed!

There is also the free ramp a bit downstream at Amasa Landing at the mouth of the Bass River. A 4x4 comes in handy on that ramp however (don't ask me how I know:rolleyes:)

    green head fly traps

I have a small amount of pamphlets on the greenhead fly published by Rutgers years ago that contain plans for a trap. If you would like one I can either mail it to you if you PM me your address or I can leave it at the Tip Seaman Park office for you to pick up, as I see you are in Tuckerton. I...

    Geese creating problems.... Poo-lution

Geese deserve a small part of the blame for poor water quality but get more than their fair share due to being more visible (and often louder) than the other sources. Development within the watersheds draining into the bay, along the non-permeable surfaces that come with it, is the main cause...

    Oregon 450 sale at REI

I think I might like that system more if it came with a missile lock feature (without real missiles, of course  ) to help suppress the occasional road rage I encounter.

Greenhead Flytraps Ordered Moved From Federal Wildlife Refuge

When I bought my home in Little Egg Harbor 25 years ago these traps were much more commonly seen than they are now. They were placed on the then-private Atlantis Golf Course, all of the marinas on Seven Bridges Road and on many other private properties near the bay or meadows. Every one I ever...

Greenhead Flytraps Ordered Moved From Federal Wildlife Refuge

Part of the explanation for this apparent discrepancy is likely Holgate’s designation as a Wilderness Area, which is managed under different rules than other parts of the refuge are, such as the wildlife drive section in Oceanville. Not only does that unit have all the man-made features you...

    Batsto Lime Kiln

I was familiar with the process of preparing limestone in kilns in the northern part of the state, even having visited a few. I had never heard of it being done with oyster or clamshell before. But then again, maybe I did. My memory is not what it once was. I can see where roasting it...

    Batsto Lime Kiln

I was just reading a copy of the Batsto Citizens Gazette from Summer, 1971 and there is an article describing an excavation of a lime kiln along the eastern shore of the millpond. I've never heard of this relic before. Has anyone here seen any evidence or remains of it?

Another wildlife warning. Humans aren't in danger. Humans ARE the danger! (Sorry AMC ;) )

    Paddlers; 2013 Delaware River Sojourn

Fly fishing for trout is the single biggest thing I miss after leaving Passaic County 30 years ago. I tried it on the Toms several times, and the trout are there, but it just isn't a trout stream as I am used to. Luckily my wife's mother lives a few hundred yards from the Pequannock River, and...

Logging in the Pinelands Just a vote away....

Maybe it’s the devil’s advocate in me but the Union Clay Works is an interesting example of how a point in time makes a difference in our perspective. I also feel that this particular site is a historic resource worthy of protection, but mining was and is one of the most destructive of man’s...

Logging in the Pinelands Just a vote away....

I’m sure there may be some justified nitpicking of details in the bill but after briefly reading some of the criticisms in the article I get a distinct sense of fretting over the sky falling by those who seem to have no idea of how our forests have come back from the totally unregulated clearing...

Hide your snacks when in Brendan Byrne SF...Yogi is coming!

It doesn’t matter what you call it as far as I’m concerned. Biologists have played around with the terminology regarding hibernation somewhat, so it really just boils down to current semantics. In fact, most of the terms used in natural history exist only in the minds of man, not in nature. It...
