Oyster Creek Power Plant cooling tower

The warm water is an artificially created benefit that only affects the waters immediately downstream of the plant. And I would hesitate to even call it a benefit when most everything drawn to that warm water is killed off by the frequent and unplanned plant shutdowns. The plant has a dismal...

Oyster Creek Power Plant cooling tower

First, I am as concerned about the jobs of those who harvest our food from the bay and ocean as I am about the natural resource itself. Those jobs are every bit as valuable and have been here far longer than the jobs of those working at the plant. I’m actually an enthusiastic proponent of...

Oyster Creek Power Plant cooling tower

This isn’t a case of a few radical environmental groups trying to halt progress and prosperity. I’ve had opportunity to interview quite a few current and retired baymen over the years for the purpose of writing biographies to be published in the show program for the Ocean County Decoy & Gunning...

    Phragmites

That Wiki article is correct as far as the muddying of the invasive vs. native status of phragmites. Evidence of phragmites has been found in extremely old peat samples in North America. I work at the park and have been keeping my eye on the patch you are talking about for some time now. It...

    quaker bridge tavern ?

The use by visiting botanists of the Quaker Bridge Tavern as a launching off spot for their explorations is a fairly well known aspect of that site among modern day plant enthusiasts. The 1805 date for the Curly Grass Fern discovery is pretty well established so I’d either question the 1808 date...

    Savoy Blvd happenings....

I’ve never been able to find out exactly what this building was used for, other than a couple of guesses. Anyone know?

    Tree Identification Query

It could be a Tulip Poplar, but they tend to have a slightly different bark pattern, with fairly even, interlocking ridges. From the detail I can see, I’d say a Sourgum, Sweetgum, White Oak, or even a Swamp White Oak.

    Tree Identification Query

I'm not sure of the site in question myself. I'm not totally up on Weymouth history. Was the mansion at the site of the current Atlantic County park, where the mill ruins are? Is so, I seem to remember sweetgum trees being there as well as the other species Al mentioned.

College student collecting frogs is mistaken for deer, shot dead

What makes these incidents especially tragic is that fact that they are virtually all preventable. There really is no such thing as a hunting or firearm accident. They are almost always the result of someone doing something stupid. If the most basic safety rules stressed in hunter and firearm...

    Cloverdale Farm

Most of what has been done so far at Cloverdale has been inside the 1870s farmhouse. The second floor has been converted to office space and the first floor will be a small visitor center. Two rooms will be devoted to the history of the farm and of cranberry agriculture in New Jersey and a third...

    Off Roading!!!!

I view a truck like the first one you described heading into the woods about the same way I view a pickup loaded with construction debris. I've owned several 4x4s, but they were for getting from point A to B, not for destroying point A to B.

Cranberry Fest and Batsto Country Living Fair

I stopped going to the cranberry festival years ago when it seemed to be drifting away from anything to do with cranberries. I don’t know if it has improved. I’d go to Batsto’s event if it wasn’t for the weather. My indoor chores have been adding up and this seems like a good weekend for them

    R.o.o.r.

And even as an avid hunter, I am neither in favor of bear hunting, nor do I approve of using fear tactics to push for it. I hunt for the same reason I fish, clam, crab and garden………to obtain my own food in as natural manner as possible. If you fear a wild species to the point that you feel it...

    Bald eagles in south Jersey?

Saw one today flying over Lake Absegami at Bass River S.P. at tree top height. No pictures possible. Was busy teaching a bunch of little darlings how to canoe.

    New to the pine barrens...

The books already mentioned would all be on my must-have list. The only one I might add is Howard Boyd’s Field Guide to the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. I find the introductory chapters on the history and industries of the pine barrens even as useful as the field guide sections.

    Decoy Show

I agree totally with you on this. We do have a policy stating vendors should remain for the duration of the show. This year was unusual because towards the end of the day on Sunday many of the walkways in front of vendor rows were virtually impassable for walkers. Vendors had very few customers...

    Decoy Show

My office runs this show, although we are not in charge of this particular park. The conditions were pretty horrendous. Several vendors’ vehicles became stuck, including one Ford Explorer that had the front corner sunk up to the top of the tire in mud, requiring us to bring the front end loader...

    Decoy Show

The Ocean County Decoy & Gunning Show will be held this weekend (Sept 26 & 27) at Tip Seaman County Park in Tuckerton. Even if you are not a waterfowler or decoy collector, there will other outdoor equipment you might be interested in being sold by vendors. There are also two new kayak vendors...
