    2017-18 Winter weather

A friend of mine, in his mid-50's, dealt with snow the old-fashioned way (shovel and a small one at that) his whole life and decided enough was enough. He recently bought the mother of all snowblowers. I mean this thing looks futuristic to me. He asked me to help him get it out of the back of...

    Garden 2017

Hey Mark, you won't be disappointed! They are delicious. Funny that you mentioned fusarium, my tomatoes and peppers both struggled with a fungal infection early in the season and managed throughout the season to stay just ahead of it. It actually killed one of my tomatoes (coyote white) and the...

Absolutely stunning! Where was that taken?

    A Nice Little Reminder

Give people something nice to share and they trash it with enthusiasm. Morons. I agree with others. Beautiful dog. I had a yellow lab like him growing up (Sam). I found Sam as a puppy with a group of kids around being not too nice around him, so I took him home. I guess 10 years went by and I...

    Garden 2017

Hey Mark, looks great! Sorry to reply so many months later. Hope you had continued success throughout the season. Our garden went pretty well this year, I didn't expand (still 6 raised beds) but we got some good stuff from it. Collards were outrageous this year, I still have the same plants...

    Meat-in-the-Woods Camera

My older son spooked a turkey one early morning and it scared the bejesus out of us. It was roosting in the underbrush and he saw it and asked 'what is that?'. I couldn't see anything at all and he was only fixed on its tail so neither of us knew what we were looking at. Like you said that...

    Sunday Morning Oct. 1

First off, great pics as always! Second, I've (almost literally) done the 'breadcrumbs' thing. If you are just learning your GPS and not yet 100% confident in your markings, you can bring cut-up strips of an orange T-shirt to hang on branches on the way in and collect them on the way out as a...

    Rattlesnake

I believe that there is a first shed right after live birth. Garters, water snakes, copperheads and rattlers all give live birth, so they'll have that ashy, dull appearance until they shed the first time. For the record, I believe that the first shed is within a few days of the birth, so I'm...

We've been looking at campsites recently, many of the online reviews of that campground range from lukewarm to downright bad. Shame.

Looking like something will be happening in Maine

I canoed the Allagash with my father when I was 9 years old. Amazing trip and I still remember parts of it clearly. One thing that I remember was the loons calling, which is an incredible, primeval sound when echoing across a lake and through a forest. Recordings don't do it justice. Another...

Tick Ecology in NJ Pine Barrens?

Agree about organophosphates, no bueno. Organophosphate pesticides were the precursor (historical, not biological) to nerve agents such as VX, sarin, soman, etc. and the mechanism of damage is identical.

    Rattlesnake

Herps rock! Here's a photo of the head of a black rat snake. I'm also going to attach a pic of a racer's head (similar in appearance). The rat snake doesn't have the ridge over its eye that the racer has, giving the rat snake somewhat of a 'surprised' look.

11 things lurking in New Jersey's forests

Yeah I figured they had a place on the list but purposely put them at the bottom. Raccoons scare me more than coyote, I should have put them there. :D Truth be told I do get a bit weary when in bear country. Chances are slim but they do get kooky sometimes.

11 things lurking in New Jersey's forests

My version of the list of things to worry about in NJ: 1. GSP, Turnpike, I-80, 287, etc. 2. The stress of getting there 3. Politicians 4. Etc. My version of the list of things in the woods to watch out for: 1. Bees/hornets, etc. 2. Domestic dogs 3. Drunken partiers/people up to no...

Interesting article. Now we have to find an arachidonic acid blocker and administer it to the ticks! :guinness:
