    RAIN?

Another comment on Matthew-jumped to a category 4. Looks like the models suggest that it could go right up the East coast. Keep an eye out!

    RAIN?

Thanks 46'er and Tsqurd. I'm interested in seeing how much falls and what Matthew ends up doing next week...

    RAIN?

Wow! Serious wind gusts and ocean turbulence on that beach cam-I figure that Matthew is too far away to be affecting our coast now, is this the remnants of a tropical depression, or just a low pressure system that formed off the coast? Those seas look angry!

Looking for Info on Pickerel Frogs

Hi Folks, I'm looking for info on sightings of pickerel frogs (especially adults!) within the Pine Barrens, especially the core Pine Barrens. Would you mind sharing info if you've seen them? Exact locations are not necessary if there is concern about sensitive areas. My reasoning in short; I'm...

How do we stop the damage?

Hi Jon, I'm glad that I'm not the only one who notices it. Now I don't agree with everything that Jason says and he's certainly drawn the ire of some folks and perhaps for good reason, but this forum is something special and I don't want to see good people start leaving in disgust because of...

How do we stop the damage?

Thank you for saying so. In my experience, this forum has historically been a community of people who may not agree with everything, but are at least respectful to one another. It would be nice if this would continue.

    RAIN?

Some weather stations are saying that the front coming in will also pull some moisture from the south where TD Julia is. Could be some good news for us!

    Gentian And Rattlesnakes

Awesome pics guy. I've always been interested in this behavior in snakes, I believe that the neonates are scent marking mommy, and they'll follow her lead to denning areas, etc. What an amazing opportunity that you had to see this.

    Garden 2016 Underway

A belated thank you, Smoke_Jumper and Spung-Man, for the good information, and my apologies for the delay. I was away on vacation in the beginning of August and haven't been on here (been playing catch-up with housework, etc.). Hope your gardens are still doing well!

Hey Mark, looks good! Amen about the healthy pepperoni. Regarding heat tolerant, not sure if you've tried that New Zealand spinach but it's a winner through and through. No bolting no matter how hot, and it's definitely drought tolerant. Giant red mustard can stand some heat too. Have...

    Garden 2016 Underway

Thanks Smoke, we love going to the farm or farmer's market too. I didn't know that strawberries were shade tolerant! Funny that you mention them because the kids want to grow them next year. Any advice for us on how to get a good-sized crop (enough for fresh eating and making a few jars of...

    Garden 2016 Underway

Possibly anecdotal, but it looks like the idea of using dill and cilantro flowers to attract parasitic wasps worked. Here is a tomato hornworm that my son found that has been hit by a parasitic wasp. The white protrusions are the cocoons of braconid wasp larva. Note the holes in them, which...

    Garden 2016 Underway

Been a while since I posted on here. We got a good bunch of turnips: ...our collard greens, kale, and mustard were huge and we got some great dishes out of them. Tomato plants are 7 feet tall and loaded: Here's a closer look at the strands of cherry tomatoes. We already got some ripe...

    Franklin Parker Preserve Foray

Regarding the white on the chin, I had an interesting thought; check this racer pic out: Here's one with a lot more white in the chin than the one above, I believe about as much as the one in the original picture: I wonder if their faces become more melanistic as they age? I noticed that...

Another vote for racer. Rat snakes don't have that pronounced a ridge above their eye. The belly of a rat snake is white too. Great pics and great info here!

And you thought ticks were bad

Have any entomologists confirmed the presence of these guys in any of the states? I know that we have cicada killers and European giant hornets here, and I cannot help but to wonder if there has been misidentifications of either for the Asian hornet?
