I cannot imagine taking 8 weeks to cross the ocean in a (possibly) fetid, pitching boat. I crossed in a troop ship in 1964. Smelled like diesel the entire way. Many bouts with seasickness, but easily nothing your ancestors went through.

Thanks, I just did as you say, and the light areas jump 30 to 40 feet higher. So as Mark says, they are plateaus. Now, they could have been even taller and shaved by man for some reason.
Mark, but what of the depressions? I know we are approaching the source for brick material and/or marl belt up there. Could the top have been dug in several places in the 19th century?
Edit: on second thought, I can't say they are depressions. They may just look that way due to the vegetation.
