    4 Rattlesnakes Along a Road

Al I think I use deer and pine flies synonymously, but use pine more times than not. I really hate them and they are the only thing that can chase me out of the pines, they seem to love to chew on my head and neck.

    4 Rattlesnakes Along a Road

Pan the ticks and chiggers certainly do keep some folks away which is fine by me, more land for me to roam. Al, the type of bushwacking you do I'm suprised you haven't built up some sort of immunity to the chiggs. The only time I'm really bothered by chiggers is at night while sleeping but I...

    4 Rattlesnakes Along a Road

I find ticks and chiggs are even worse by you Al and further down along the del. bay area. Neither chiggs or ticks bother me much anymore. I think they've recognized me almost as a local and just leave me alone, they like to nibble on the new folks to break them down, almost like pine barrens...

    'Lost' rainbow toad rediscovered

Guy last Saturday in the pines you would have thought it was a spring day. I had wonkers just ripping out there and leopard, greens, grey trees and carpenters were going crazy as well. All that rain must have fooled them into thinking it was breeding time again.

    Corn snake

Ed make sure not to reveal any locality data publicly on that snake....just a heads up. Corns are uncommon where you live Boyd with only scattered records being documented. Water snakes and coastal plains milksnakes can look similar at a quick glance. If you do find one down there take a good...

1960's NY Times travel article on the NJ Pine Barrens

Pan, I was working on a radio telemetry study for some reptile species...sorry for being a bit vague but I don't want to disclose too much. Welcome to the site and keep posting those pictures up, I really like seeing older photos of the pines. Jeff, I think what you said sums up the way I feel...

1960's NY Times travel article on the NJ Pine Barrens

Those are some really cool photos, now I know why they call them the plains. I spent alot of time doing some work up in the plains last year and it quickly became my favorite place in the barrens. I know this has been mentioned on here by Jeff I think but you always feel like the ocean is...

    Ospreys in New Jersey

I donated 300 and got my company to match my donation for a total of 600. We have only put up one platform thus far as my lucrative employer hasn't lived up to their end of the deal yet......but when all is said and done we should have 3 platforms out there at 200 each...

    Ospreys in New Jersey

I donated money for a platform in March to be built just beyond my sister property on the bay. I helped a few guys from CWNJ put it up and about a month later a pair were hanging out on it. They haven't built the nest yet but will next year probably. There is a second platform that someone...

    4 Rattlesnakes Along a Road

The fact they didn't move away is a compliment to Guy for not getting too close to them. Most people would poke them or get to close. Those snakes would sit there all day without anyone noticing they won't rattle because they don't want people to see them.

    4 Rattlesnakes Along a Road

Don't be afraid of encountering rattlesnakes in the barrens. I will do my best to alleviate some of the fear. Rattlesnakes are a threat to nobody on this site in any way shape or form. They are a calm creature that want nothing to do with people. They don't pursue people they don't even want you...

    4 Rattlesnakes Along a Road

No this isn't mating behavior and also is the wrong time of the year for mating(too early).

    4 Rattlesnakes Along a Road

Al, Guy's experience here is pretty unique. I stay pretty close lipped on TR behavior in the pines and my experiences mostly because I don't want much attention on the species....but I will say this is quite unique.....either pregnant females or non gravid females hanging out together, these...

Is this why Pine Snakes are a threatened species in the New Jersey Pine Barrens?

Its kind of a funny video when you think about it. They are so afraid of it but insist on messing with which will only result in the greater likelihood they get bit. Also they want good video of it almost as if they think its cool like you and I would think Al. But in the end they just want to...

Is this why Pine Snakes are a threatened species in the New Jersey Pine Barrens?

In this case I have the feeling its a open lawn type setting where a timber would seek shade to do exactly what you said, regulate its temperature. Its EXTREMELY rare to find a timber in the open with one exception, pregnant females. Pregnant females will sit in direct sun to a certain point but...

Is this why Pine Snakes are a threatened species in the New Jersey Pine Barrens?

Well said German. Shakieg, listen not everyone has to love snakes, I'm just trying to clear up any misconceptions about them. Bobpx, thats definetly scary, glad everything ended up without anyone getting bit. The rabbits and shade of the cage probably attracted the snake.

Is this why Pine Snakes are a threatened species in the New Jersey Pine Barrens?

There are some misconceptions about alot of animals out there. With snakes its a big misconception. Rattlesnakes will rattle if your about to step on one, other snakes may not. Remember its a hikers responsibility to understand the risks of the ecosystem he steps into. Even with that said...

Is this why Pine Snakes are a threatened species in the New Jersey Pine Barrens?

True Joe, and snakes eat some of the carriers, not to mention the reason why this gentlemen can walk a trail down in new gretna is probably because of the woods being protected because it has pine snakes there. When you stop seeing pine snakes it will be a day when you stop seeing the pine...
