Is this why Pine Snakes are a threatened species in the New Jersey Pine Barrens?

Why, there is no way for them to hurt you, a grey squirrel is honestly a bigger threat to your life.

Egg Harbor Man Bitten By Rattlesnake

I find NJ to be one of the best states when it comes to people moving animals off the road. I appreciate anyone who makes some attempt to save a critter on the road.

Box Turtle ID(moved from Webbs Mill Thread)

Guy your right she is a female. They get a little excitable prior to laying eggs, its one of the few times they'll try to get away from you and won't go in their shell.

Egg Harbor Man Bitten By Rattlesnake

Thats what I hate the most. It is pretty common knowledge they are there,, but I still hate it. Fortunately the nature of a timber rattlesnake makes them so hard to find and requires going into habitat that quite honestly is unwalkable that a random encounter is rare. In that area finding...

Box Turtle ID(moved from Webbs Mill Thread)

I didn't want to hijack Hewey's thread so here are some pictures of male box turtles versus females. Male Box, Notice the red eye move towards pink/white as it gets toward the pupil. Also notice the larger squarer head, with larger bill/beak, Red Eyed Female, notice the smaller head not...

Egg Harbor Man Bitten By Rattlesnake

Good point. I get geniuenly mad seeing the media talk about this stuff, I just wish no attention was given to these events. This will just bring more people looking for them, potentially harming them. Leave them alone and they'll leave you alone.

    Rattlesnake Bite on 679 !!

Just like I thought he wanted to handle the snake. You mess with a rattler and your going to get tagged. They are an docile creature really but you mess with them your going to get bit. Again I appreciate his effort to get it off the road but get it off and move along....he seems like a stand...

    Rattlesnake Bite on 679 !!

Al, I'm sure for milking its necessary but in this case I think there was better ways to get the animal across. I'm sure the guy had good intentions. Crossing rattlesnakes can be tricky if you run up on them agrresively they coil up normally and then its tough to get them across. I've had...

    Rattlesnake Bite on 679 !!

I appreciate the guys effort to get it too safety but there is no need to pick it up. Shuffling your feet behind it will scurry them across the road. More then likely this guy wanted to handle it and sounds like he had an idea about how to accomplish this. A snake should never be pinned and...

Upper reaches of the Webbs Mill Branch

Al and Guy, that red eyed boxie is a girl, more then likely looking to nest. While males have red eyes females do as well but a different shade of red. Males are an intense red while females are red with the centers change towards red brown. Also this rarely gets listed in field guides and is a...

    Eastern tiger salamander

Hey Guy just seeing your post, feel free to make my avatar that, I'm a bit computer challenged at times. Also in regards to the title of that article its a bit over top, tiger salamanders in my opinion are by no means disappearing. Whip, nice larvae there I have to stop by that site sometime...

    Eastern tiger salamander

Cool project, glad the state is doing this for a species that very easily adapts to man made pools. There are probably lots of tiger salamanders in the ground there are just very few real good pools that retain water deep enough for breeding. Digging pools deeper and digging new pools is...

A hike at the Parker Preserve

As some may know I volunteer out on the Parker Preserve doing work with reptiles and amphibians and help police the land for illegal wildlife collection. I have a lot of confidence in the two folks I know well out there. With that said I haven't gone out to that stretch of land since they...

Pet turtles require more space than you may think

Wow, this one from the archives....wish I was still 25 hah. As for painteds that was my understanding based on what I read, but quite honestly I could be wrong. I'm sure fish and wildlife website would have more info. Personally I see no reason to remove any animal from the wild whether...

    Philadelphia Dreamin

SJ magazine is the worst. It should just be called Voorhees, Haddonfield, Cherry Hill and Marlton Magazine. When looking through it I often have to read the front cover over and over to remind myself that this is SJ. Reading the magazine reminds me of why we went into complete economic...

Childhood shift: Most kids have stopped playing outdoors

My friends and I always talk about this. Everyday after school I couldn't wait to get outside and do something, whether it was sports, playing in the woods it was just the normal thing for boys to do. I drive by fields that I use to play football in after school and there is never kids there...
