Wharton SF this weekend April 5 & 6

I had a horse growing up. I have always thought that would be a very rewarding way to travel the pines. I'll have to try it someday. I know Ed does some of that and sees a great deal of wildlife. Jeff

Recreation in the Pines... My thoughts

Bob, I've heard similar statements made by a member of the forest fire service. Ben, it mostly just deepens the break a bit. I could see your reasoning as it might widen around the turns but a motorcycle riding on it usually is a little restricted from it's depth and doesn't lay into the turn...

Recreation in the Pines... My thoughts

Excellent comments and information Jeepinjp. I think it is clear that both MP and jeepinmp are very active on this subject outside of this disscussion. I think you both provide fine examples of environmentally aware riders. I agree that much of the facts stated in the PPA articles are...

    Bullfrogs and snails

When I was growning up in Monmouth county I lived in a farming district. I used to catch HUGE bullfrogs all the time. And snails were all over. It occured to me that I rarely see snails and large bullfrogs here in the pines. Has anyone else noticed that? Jeff

Recreation in the Pines... My thoughts

The thing is Russ, I have had alot of bad experiences with reckless ORV riders. I used to have kids riding past my house at midnight waking my baby up. I have to take the long way around to get to places from where I live now because roads have been closed due to reckless quad riders. I've...

Recreation in the Pines... My thoughts

"ORv's have been damaging natural land, farmland and private property since this new form of recreation began over twenty years ago. The damage caused by these vehicles has made national and state headlines, and a newly published book (book title) is devoted to stopping this form of recreation...

Actually he was. We neglected to mention that Paul, in addition to being a top notch hiker, is also a Jedi Knight.

    Ice Age Pine Barrens

Thanks Gabe. I will have to keep an eye open for evidence of a ridge on the south eastern side of some of these spungs. I didn't realize much excavation was performed in the spungs. Do you know if these excavations were done on state land? Also, I am surprised that primative man would have...

Recreation in the Pines... My thoughts

I think Ben addressed the specific errors very well. I also think the article supplied by MP proves very effectively that Rhoads and the PPA are not just concerned about enforceing the current laws on ORV use or addressing illegal ORV use. there is a call for strict, even extremist...

    Meandering Through the Mordecai

I love "retracing history" trip reports almost as much as I love doing it myself. Very nice Ben! The streams pictured appear to be canals. Does that seem logical or am I misinterpreting the picture. No canonballs huh? Jeff

    Alquatka Branch, a PBX Hike

That is a good shot of Mickey. He is in amazing shape. Really great shots Bob. You have a real knack with that camera. I guess my "motion detector camera shots" were a bit much for the public forum huh? That is probably for the best. Jeff

    Fire Breaks

Having lived in an area for so long where they were always making new fire breaks I couldn't believe I never saw the machine that did it. Now I have. Thanks for the pic. Jeff

Substantial ruins along Mt. Misery Road

It is interesting that we both used the word "substantial" but that is what it is. Here is a thread of mine from a while back. The pictures aren't attached anymore but I think they are still in my gallery. Is this what you found in '77 Whiting...
