Recreation in the Pines... My thoughts

Thanks for linking that PPA article Ben, but the article that I was referring to was in the most recent PPA newsletter. I am sure Russ has a copy. It was far more harsh and contained more errors. I am surpised that the PPA is not addressing the current rules of the state forest, that...

Recreation in the Pines... My thoughts

From your previous posts I did understand this. Enforcement of illegal ORV use is in effect and has been for a long time. I believe that increasing police manpower in the state forests could have serious negitive consequences. Your posts on the matter were very articulate and helped to ease...

Recreation in the Pines... My thoughts

One thing to consider in these disscussions is that we (in general) have a tendancy to group people together because of common interest or ideals. This doesn't necessarily consitute a community. 4x4 people (for example) come from all over, most don't know each other, and have no...

Give me a list of "Must See's"

Nice report and photos George. It amazes me also how alot of what has been dumped could have been thrown out in the regular trash. Hopefully those dudes with the trash headed home (doubtful though). Jeff

    Meandering Through the Mordecai

Great report Ben! Several years ago I had suggested a PBX sweep of the Mordecai swamp in a long shot attempt to find that legendary pile of cannonballs, remains of Joseph Mulliners hide out, and the saw dust pile (I guess you found that Gabe). I just never got around to organizing it. Gabe...

    Meandering Through the Mordecai

Bob, a corduroy road is a road constructed of timber within a cedar swamp. They were commonly used by the logging industry as a means of hauling wood by horse drawn wagon and later automobiles/trucks through cedar swamps. Due to the cedars strong resistance to rot, many have survived. Jeff

    deer swimming across Rancocus Creek

I once had a few cross the basto at the forks while I was fishing. It was very cool. I remember canoing out to one on a huge lake in Maine once when I was a kid.

    Cedar swamp

Cedar swamps are very high in acidity, shallow, and fluctuate greatly though out the year. Fish populations are sparse, although black banded sunfish and sphagum sunfish are sometimes found. Pickerel not common here except for some red fin. BTW: great photos MP!!!

    Cedar swamp

Generally, White cedars are far more common than the red. The red cedar populations seem to increase near the shore. There are a few ways of telling them apart but I usually look for small blue fruit (berries) that give away the identity of the red cedar. The fruit seems to stay on for most...
