    Whippoorbill's gift to us

I am glad you are enjoying the CD Bill. What did you have in mind with music to complement the bog sounds? Did you actually want a boogie? Or something more ambient? What did you have in mind? Jeff

Recreation in the Pines... My thoughts

Thanks for sharing your thoughts MP. I think your perspective on the situation is accurate and I agree that education is key in reducing future conflicts. I think reducing conflict is a worthy goal, I don't think there will ever be total harmony. But a little tolerance on everybody's part goes...

    First post

There has been some controversy over whether these holes are pine snake or fox. I would agree with Scott that it is most likely fox. Pine snakes do remove a surprising amount of dirt from their dens from what I understand. Welcome to the site. Jeff

    fire

Yesterday (Monday) I noticed a great deal of smoke coming from west of 206 in the Medford area (approx.) and tonight I noticed that Medford/Jackson road was closed off. Did anyone hear of a fire in that area? Jeff

    Hiking the Great Swamp Again

I'm sorry Guy, I am having a little trouble understanding the question. Are you saying that you agree that savannas (as we know them) were created by altering natural savannas with dynamite for cranberry production? Jeff

    Deadly Traps in Wharton SF

I can honestly say that the idea of being decapitated while riding my motorcycle (completely legally) is terrifying. No, I will not stop visting the pines because of it but I am alot more cautious. I think the traps are designed to punish people for using motorized vehicles on public lands and...

    Ore Spring Bog

I got out for a bit yesterday to investigate a bog on the Ore Spring branch. I vistited this spot a few weeks back at night in my bronco and had a bit of a mishap. My bronco slid off the side of a dike and got wedged against some pines. It pulled itself out but suffered some body damage. oh...

A hike tomorrow in the pines

No, go down 206 south, just about any of the roads on the eastern side of 206 will get you into the swamp just south of atsion all the way down to 613. Guy just did a trip report on the great swamp with photos and maps. Jeff

A hike tomorrow in the pines

    Hiking the Great Swamp Again

Real Nice photos Guy! It is funny, in photographs savannas look like they would be easy to walk through. Of course, you and I know better:mrgreen: You definitely covered some hard miles there. But isn't the Great Swamp, well, great? In an area known for swamps...to have an area called the...

There is a healthy coyote population but that doesn't mean they were shipped in.

    Controlled burn?

Well, there is little argument that wild fires are advantagous to the forest. The pine barrens as we know it are dependant on it. What would be cool is if the forest fire service could prepare ahead of time for a massive forest fire (particularly in the plains where the ecology is most fire...

    Can and Can't?

Just, While I know Ben was told by a ranger that roads that appear on topo maps are legal to drive on, this is more of a rule of thumb than law. I am not 100% certain but I believe the law is "on designated roads" however, the roads are not designated except in some cases that prohibit...

    Controlled burn?

Thanks for posting this link. The "history of fire" was particularly interesting with lots of historical photos within the film. The summery at the end did ignore the postive ecological benefits of wild fires. I wonder if the forest fire service public relations dept. tries to keep this fact...
