    Eastern Kingsnake and others

Went to look for pine snakes this morning. Came up empty, so I went to my cant miss racer spot. There was no racer there but instead this guy which I was much happier to see. He was sitting under a bridge crossing a cedar stream. I realized after about five minutes why snakes like this spot when...

    Box Turtle today

Its more like floating, box turtles have an air pocket in their shell. It is kind of a safety mechanism built in. If they fall into a swamp, river, creek they will float and kind of paddle wherever they want to go after that. If you ever see one enter the water they go under water and...

    Box Turtle today

Jeff, sometimes they dig test holes. I've never really understood why they dig into the night seems like their exposing themselves to raccoons. As for her shell it could be stained from the cedar swamp, box turtles love to sit or bury into shallow mud. And the only time a box won't go into...

    Box Turtle today

A long time, exactly how long is hard to tell. But I know they have found ones in the wild that have dates back around 1910 carved on their shell. They have found snapping turtles with musket balls lodged in there shell, turtles live a long long time, that is the only thing they have in their...

    Box Turtle today

I meant SHE looks ancient that is a female, but obviously still young enough to be laying eggs. Which is the only time you will see a box turtle out around dusk. I've seen two box turtles with shells that perfectly formed and both were ancient, I bet that turtle is at least 60 years old.

    Box Turtle today

Jeff, that is one of the most unusual box turtles I have ever seen. That guy is ancient looking. Was his shell dirty or just completely worn and faded. Nice pic, thanks for posting that. chris

    A fun day in the Pine Barrens - trip # 2 - 06/17/06

Glad you had a good time. Its ashame you found no snakes but that is just the way the pines tend to be. Fence swifts are real common in the pines, they are friendly guys and normally tolerate the whole photo taking process. The first fowler's toad was a nice one, the second looked like he...

    Tick Bite Kills

What I do when I go out is bring a extra pair of shorts. Before I even get in my car I take off all my hiking clothes and place them in a bag and tie it tight. I then do an inspection of my entire body, I adopted Guy's lint roller technique, which works good for getting my back and back of...

Hunting Rattlesnakes with Rattlesnake Ace bobpbx

Nice find! Is there only one timber there, is this the same one as before? Normally with most herps if the area has one it normally has several. At least this has been my expierience with timbers in pennslyvania. Once again very nice find.

    Cougar sited, now what?

ChrisNJ, do you have the web address for that site I would like to check it out. The fact that this thing is staying in one town makes me think it is someones old pet. A few weeks ago there were 4 sightings of a cougar in delaware, maybe this is the same one. I wonder what they would do with...

A good first hour in the pines

Went out again today, nothing was out. Too hot for the old reliables like spotted turtles and racers. Did see another black rat snake, a juvie box turtle, and fowler's toads. Also saw about a dozen raided turtle nests, mostly redbelly or painted. The black rat was smallish 3 feet and skinny...

A good first hour in the pines

The black rat I saw wasn't actually near brackish water. However, many of the racers I see are always near brackish water. The black rat in that photo was the biggest I think I will ever see. I know in new jersey they say that they only get six feet...but this thing was huge and extremely...

    conspicuous by its absence...?

Here is my take on the collecting thing when it comes to corns in new jersey, and all reptiles really. If they weren't that common 50 years ago, and they are pretty rare now I don't know how much this has to do with collecting. Thanks to the internet and modern day shipping methods it is much...

    conspicuous by its absence...?

Bob, personally I think a collector will take whatever he can find. He may get 100 for a pretty one, and 50 for the less brilliant one. But if it means avoiding employment he'll take whatever he can get.

    conspicuous by its absence...?

I go to a place in cumberland county were they are suppose to be. I've heard that they like railroad ties which this place has. However, I'm not a snake guy and just getting my feet wet so hopefully in the coming years I will come across one. In your expierience what kind of weather do they...

    Cougar sited, now what?

I could see one crossing the watergap were it narrows. I'll buy the escaped pet thing and the fact that they may be breeding is possible. Grendel, I thought you were saying that there was wild ones still here, captives are a possibility.

A good first hour in the pines

Brandon, did you find the spotted in atlantic county? Suprised you have found no racers I see about a half a dozen different ones every time out, in the same general area though. This is only the second black rat I've seen, and I doubt I will every see a more heatlhy specimen. The nice thing...
