    Atsion Dam To Be Replaced

http://www.courierpostonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080816/NEWS01/808160354/1006 It will be a shame to see the current one go. They will save the gate wheels though, as a decorative touch for the new one. I sure hope this project doesn't exhibit the same progress as the mansion...

    Blueberries? Anyone?

Yes, the high bush is the one that is cultivated commercially. See my post above. Be sure you know what you are eating because there are other things in the woods with blue berries that are not edible.

Batsto and Atsion: A Quick Saturday Adventure

Nice little trip with the youngster Ben. I took my two boys on more woods rides than they will ever remember but I will never forget. They do appreciate it now. I too am amazed at the apparent lack of supervision and motivation for the contractor to complete these restorations. If it was a...

    Cicadas

When I was a teenager in the 70's we had a hatch of these around the base of a gray birch in my yard: (a.k.a. the 17 year locust) http://biology.clc.uc.edu/steincarter/cicadas.htm Cool as hell and the casings made great gags when you hung them on people's shirts and yelled "WHOA what the...

    Speedwell, Dutchtown Bogs

Jerseyman recently gave us some definitive information on the origin of the name Miller's bogs here in Pestletown. http://forums.njpinebarrens.com/showthread.php?t=5408&highlight=millers+bogs&page=2 Every long time local in this area considers the bogs at the end of the road in Pestletown as...

    Blue Fishing

Ain't too many things that don't come out of the smoker tastin' good. I brine deer and fish the same with water, brown sugar, kosher salt and fresh garlic. Once deer or fish is on the rack (not together), I hit them with JO Seasoning (similar to Old Bay but better) and run the black pepper...

    Blue Fishing

Nice fishing Ed! I love bluefishing and used to set up trips each year in my office with the Mary M III and the White Star out of Barnegat. I am having one of my slowest years ever on my boat for fluke and blues off Cape May. I usually have a freezer full of flounder fillets and plenty of...

    Those darn flies

The deer flies are pretty bad down here and one thing that amazes me is the concentrations of the flies in localized spots. When I walk each night I cover a 3 mile loop and I know which spots along the loop are going to be bad. The same spots are bad each year too. I don't see any one...

    Blueberries? Anyone?

True blueberries are highbush blueberries, Vaccinium corymbosm. They are usually in fairly wet soils and grow up to 10-12' high What most of us down here call a huckleberry are either of two species common to the pines: Dwarf Huckleberry the most common in my woods, Gaylussacia dumosa and...

    Blueberries? Anyone?

Jim All the roads leading from Quaker bridge to the east are very passable without 4wd. A few roads leading north toward Mannis from Pushline Road are not passable in winter due to water holes but are bone dry in the summer. Scott

    Blueberries? Anyone?

Mark, I have been keeping an eye on the wild berries on my nightly walks down here and tonight I can say that the lowbush or huckleberries are at their absolute peak. I added a half hour to my walk just eating the huckleberries at the west end of Wharton Ave. I have checked a couple wet spots...

    Beer (again)

    Beer (again)

You have no idea Piney Maestro! My older son bought me a case of the Dogfishhead 90 Minute IPA for Father's Day and enjoying that has been just about the high point of my 50 years on the planet. A good second place is Wolaver IPA by Otter Creek. I took my younger son out fishing on my boat...

    Beer (again)

I am truly saddened by this acquisition. :( There is nothing wrong with an ice cold Bud. I don't think I can drink it anymore knowing its owned by cold, heartless Eurotrash. Check out Inbev's corporate philosophy: http://www.inbev.com/go/brands.cfm They're all about "positioning", brand...

    The Ramble Inn

Ain't the prison system a beauty? When you read the artilcle about his conviction, the State makes it sounds like he will rot in hell for his wrongdoings. The prison system, on the other hand, couldn't wait to put him back out to try again.

    The Ramble Inn

Sam Siligato was the namesake. His latest escapade was burning down a building for insurance money. Here is an excerpt from a post I did in 2004 on this site: 05-15-04, 07:20 AM "Sam Siligato, the owner of the Silly Gator, was just recently charged with having a large building torched to...
