    Mannis Duck Pond

My wife and I and the dog hit Mannis Duck Pond, north of Quaker Bridge, today for a beautiful winter hike. We parked a little northeast of Lower Forge and walked the rest of the way in. The pond was awesome with its winter ice coat and you can't beat a winter sky for photos. The dam makes a...

    Another questionable ebay item.

I have a Sanka jar 1/3 full of water that I scooped out of the Niagara River just above the falls in July 1972 when I was 13. It used to be full but 35 years of slow evaporation around the lid is taking a toll. Ebay here I come!

    Burlington County Insane Asylum?

Thanks Jerseyman for an informative post. I have had visited Buttonwood and a few other less than desireable institutions because of a situation with my father in the early and mid 1990's. My father was diagnosed with Alzheimers Disease in 1990 and for the first year or two my mother was able...

    Burlington County Insane Asylum?

While it is not in Burlington County as you requested in your original post, I have had the privilege of going through the grounds of Menantico Colony in Cumberland County, owned and formerly run by the Vineland Training School. Check out this fascinating link and discussions of "feeble...

Responsibility for deer carcasses depends on where they are killed

Ironically, as I write this, I am eating a roasted roadkilled venison sandwich for lunch. I just gave some to a non-hunter that I work with and he loved it. I told him to watch out for the Peterbilt emblem! A friend gave me the deer last week. It was smoked by a trash truck in front of his...

Well I've heard that once you get past the smell, you've got it licked. I didn't just say that did I?

    The 11 Minute Error

For every 1000', 11 minutes will throw you out 3.2' Use the tangent function on a scientific calculator. Tan 11' x 1000'=3.1998' The angle must be expressed in decimals of a degree. 11'= 0.1833 degrees. Scott

    Gray Day in the Woods

My wife and I and the dog hiked a few miles along the east bank of the Batsto on Sunday. It was one of the quitest days I can remember in the pines. It was cold and gray with absolutely no wind and there was a lot of moisture in the air deadening the sounds. The skies were gray and it felt...

    Becoming a Forest Ranger

That sounds good Bob. It also sounds more economical than doing the full run at the 4 year school. We have one son in Camden County College and one in a 4 year school, Millersville Univ., and the County tuition bill is pretty manageable. The Millersville bill is slowly bleeding me out. Next...

    Becoming a Forest Ranger

BCC would probably get you to the Associates level. Most county colleges, as far as I know, do not offer bachelor degree programs. Some are affiliated with 4 year schools that make transfer of credits to the 4 year school an easy transition.

    Becoming a Forest Ranger

You will need a bachelors degree to become a ranger in N.J. I graduated from Cook College in 1981 with a bachelors degree in their Natural Resouce Management program. (now called Professional Resource Management) Lynn Flemming, who was on the list posted above as Assistant Director of Parks and...

Haddonfield - after the great flood?

Meet you on top of Apple Pie Hill when the S hits the fan. Should be high enough. I got the wine and I'll bring the smoked deer meat. Scott

Haddonfield - after the great flood?

I did two weeks on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska 4 years ago and did some minor hiking around what is known as the Exit Galcier. Here is a link: http://www.nps.gov/kefj/planyourvisit/exit-glacier.htm As you drive up to it, there are signs along the road marking where the glacier was at various...

favorite places to eat and imbibe in the pines

George I am pleased to inform you that I was part of that stupid drunk trick. It was me, your dad, Tommy, Kerry and Joe Sharp. We had snoot full before we even got there. Me and Tommy were walkng in to the bar and I saw the cow tethered in the back of a guy's pickup. It was a young Jersey...

    Cabelas

I highly recommend the Yuengling Brewery tour if you are going all the way to Cabelas. Yuengling is only about another 20 miles north in Pottsville. The building is older than dirt and built on the side of a mountain. The original cold storage was in caves down below that you were allowed to...

favorite places to eat and imbibe in the pines

I remember the goat. I also remeber the clock behind the bar that ran backwards (whacky time) and the sign listing the charges for phone call lying: Just Left $1.00 Not here $2.00 Haven't seen him. $3.00 (Just guessing at the prices. I remember seeing that clock not too long ago but it...

favorite places to eat and imbibe in the pines

I remeber the dog well, I just can't remember the name. I used to stop in quite a bit on my street legal enduro in the late 70's through mid 80's. I am thinking something very typical like Duke or Prince but I just can't recall.

favorite places to eat and imbibe in the pines

I am with you Ed. That's my kind of place. The kind of place where you wipe your feet on the way out. I think the 206 Pic kind of lost its piney edginess a few years back. In the mid to late 70's Medford Lakes and Shamong hadn't been spoiled with the McMansion developments yet and the Pic was...
