HERE maps - possible changes coming

If anyone else is looking for an alternative site for the Mapbox satellite imagery now that it will be removed, I found what I was looking for here: https://mapcarta.com/21348050/Map Just put it into satellite mode.

HERE maps - possible changes coming

That is quite unfortunate. I hope that the situation can be resolved in some way, and you are able to re-enable these maps at some point. I did not really use the HERE maps often, but the Mapbox hybrid map is very useful and has probably the most detailed satellite imagery (Maxar, I think?)...

    The Pioneer Sportsman's Club

I wasn't sure if it could be a dwelling or not. The one I took pictures of looks a bit too small to be a house, although it does look like there are ruins of a chimney next to it. The terra cotta looked like a chimney liner. The largest one to the south could have been a house, but again there...

    The Pioneer Sportsman's Club

Not the same thing, but here are some photos of the foundations of the buildings around the Alloway/DeMarco monument. I was there just a few days ago. Is there any further information about these buildings? Were they equipment sheds or something for the blueberry operation? Here they are on...

    Our Finds Today

Makes me think about how the newer NJ tags, which are just printed rather than stamped like they used to be, will quickly become useless to future archeologists. If one of them gets buried today, I imagine 80 years from now all that will be left will be a blank piece of metal.

Apple Pie Hill January 1 Fire Tower Climb

I had all the time I wanted up there earlier this year and I still only stayed up for a few minutes. I might be built for our flat terrain. I don't like heights.

Looks like every single 1-minute slot has been filled

Apple Pie Hill January 1 Fire Tower Climb

I can't imagine that it will be that packed. The last time I was there was for a similar event in February; check out the massive crowds that showed up then :) On the other hand, since there's also First Day Hikes happening, maybe that makes it a lot more popular. I was interested in maybe...

Introducing my 2023 traditional USGS-style topo

I think it is at the point where collapsible categories (Aerials, Topo, LIDAR, etc) would be even better to clean things up, but I probably shouldn't make feature requests here... Also, the Favorites feature does get me close enough, with some customization.

Introducing my 2023 traditional USGS-style topo

You could also resort to labeling it "Tea Time Hill" again, which I think is a name still used :) I actually like that name a bit better, as it's more in the tradition of odd descriptive names of things in the Pines; your Bread and Cheese Runs and Featherbed Branches and Ong's Hats, et cetera...

Link rot. I tried to access it from this thread and it appeared to be gone.

    Where is this?

Nice, beat me to it. I was just wondering about this the other day: how long since "Un-Bridge" at Lower Forge has actually been a bridge? Close to a century? It doesn't even seem to be there on 1930s aerials. I did see this old front page article about it.

Introducing my 2023 traditional USGS-style topo

Thanks for these updates, this is cool stuff. And on Christmas, no less. Just two small comments: A very minor correction could be made here on the new topo to fix the name of this hill to Mt Korbar: https://boydsmaps.com/#15.00/39.803909/-74.612931/pines2023/0.00/0.00 - here is a note you...

    2023 in review

Gorgeous! #4 looks like it could be something out of Yellowstone. What a beautiful place we are blessed to call home. Merry Christmas.

    Christmas at Batsto

Interesting! I really like this explanation. It does look like a stylized steam hammer, and steam hammers were one of the products of the Bethlehem Steel company which Wharton co-founded. I think it fits.

    Christmas at Batsto

This was my first thought as well, but our guide ruled this out right away by pointing out that Wharton, a Quaker, wouldn't have had anything to do with the Freemasons.

    Christmas at Batsto

Here is a question that came up after the tour, but did not have a satisfactory answer: is there some significance to this design on the staircase newel post? I think this would date from the Sloan & Balderston remodel of the house done at the beginning of the Wharton era in approximately...
