    Christmas at Batsto

A few photos from inside the mansion done up for the season. I had never been inside at night before. It was a really excellent tour, with a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy Holidays to all.

The Batona Trail Diary, the First Thirty Miles

If you're looking for help putting together a PDF, I might be able to help out. Just thought I would offer. Send me a PM if you like. Bob's suggestion is good as well, and may end up doing almost exactly the same thing I would do.

    Foggy Morning

I saw the fog was coming, but opted for some non-PB photography yesterday.

    Dickens Festival Medford

Yes, many times over many years. I wanted to get over there today but I was unfortunately not able to. I imagine it looked especially striking with all this dense fog, and it would have added to the loose Victorian London theme. It's Medford's biggest and probably best festival; you should go...

    Batona Trail Mile Markers

We are a little off topic for this thread now, but yes, there's a ton of free software out there for interfacing with the dongle. A lot of it is linked in the article I posted earlier, although it is from a decade ago and the state of the art has changed a bit. Today you would most likely want...

    Batona Trail Mile Markers

You can build an ADS-B receiver for next to nothing using a cheap tuner card originally designed for receiving terrestrial DVB-T television and some open source software. I put one of these together 10 years ago for less than $20. In addition to ADS-B it can tune into air traffic control, AIS...

    Batona Trail Mile Markers

Out of curiosity, I put out an inquiry to a representative with the OCSJ. They do indeed have the coordinates of the markers, but were hesitant to share them because of accuracy problems (I suppose they were previously provided to the public at some point, as Guy mentioned, and then people...

    "Elevated fire weather conditions"

Yes, you have to be careful with it when it gets extremely cold outside. I manually turn it down when it gets well below freezing or if I notice condensation. Ideally the Nest would be smart enough to adjust the humidity threshold based on outdoor temperature, but despite being a "smart"...

    "Elevated fire weather conditions"

I installed a whole-house evaporative humidifier a couple years ago. It's controlled automatically by the smart thermostat and has helped tremendously in the winter. A bit of a project to install but very doable. Worth considering something like this if you happen to have central forced-air heat.

    Where is this?

Ah well. That's as good as I'm going to do.

    Where is this?

Really stretching now because I haven't been back there and I don't know what it looks like, but maybe somewhere like here or here? Or maybe someone put a grill right near the gate here.

    Where is this?

Based on the hint, I will guess perhaps somewhere along West Mill Road, maybe around the back side of Paradise Lakes or near Albertson Brook?

    Fall in the Pines

Yes indeed. Playing with long exposures here, between 30 and 90 seconds. It was much, much darker than it looks, with only the light of the moon on the scene.

    Fall in the Pines

The mansion photo is from the West Jersey Astronomical Society star watch just this past Saturday. It was an exceptionally clear night. Crude moon photo taken through the eyepiece of a 1980s Edmund Scientific Astroscan telescope.

Who here has a solar electric system?

A friend of mine with a Tesla lives in an apartment complex with free charging. Unless he has to take a long trip and do supercharging stops, he pays nothing to fuel up. I guess you could argue that this amenity is being paid for in his lease, but he's not paying a lot.

    Raised trail?

Either way, this waypoint is marked as "Pan's Hat" on my map now.

    Ticks & Chiggers--a study

Indeed, there was exactly such a program. Fish & Wildlife reintroduced wild turkeys here in 1977, following over a hundred years of deforestation and overhunting. The program was very successful. There were already enough birds to support a spring hunting season by 1981...

    Ticks & Chiggers--a study

Speaking of turkeys - I came across a little wildlife powwow off Quaker Bridge Road on Saturday morning. A bunch of turkeys and deer eating corn or some kind of feed, while a black cat looked on. I guess I interrupted breakfast.

    Stone Searching Fall/Winter 2023-2024

I often wonder if that bridge will ever be rebuilt someday.
