    Thick Hole

Fellow at Lines in the Pines who was involved had a book about it this year that he was selling. He made it sound fascinating. I haven't gotten to it yet, but we'll see if the book is as interesting as him talking was.

Webbs Mill Bog Trail - Lacey Township, NJ

Few weeks back in the rain and cold, took the family exploring. I finally managed to make it to Webbs Mill Bog to see the pitcher plants. The boardwalk is short and sweet, but finding the trail was a bit of pain (drove past the trailhead twice). Rain suit kind of day... Boardwalk is...

Dr. James Still Nature Trail - Medford, NJ

A week ago, we attended the grand opening of the Dr. James Still Nature Trail, located at the Dr. James Still Historic Office Site & Education Center! The trail, kiosk, and herb gardens were created as part of a pair of Eagle Projects from two Boy Scouts in Medford and Medford Lakes (article on...

    Ghost Tracks

I was thinking about heading down to see this last weekend. The pictures of folks who went kind of make me glad I didn't, it was a madhouse down there. Someone got clever and took some shots at night, with some helpers pointing a flashlight to stand in for the train light. It was a really...

The last male Northern White Rhino

This is so sad. :( Apparently they saved some of his little swimmers so that they can attempt to bring them back, but how do you manage that when there are two of something left on Earth?

    Lines on the Pines

Was a good year this year, had my own table for the first time. Spent too much money on books, which is a given. I went to the dinner for the first time, got to hang out with Kayak Karl and his wife, it was a blast. :)

Port Republic Trails - Bog Trail and Peninsula Trail

Apologies for no posts then a million posts, getting caught up on trail reviews today... My dad passed just before Thanksgiving, so I took a day at the end of the month to take the oldest kid hiking. We opted for the Port Republic Trails. We'd done the Mill Pond Loop in the Spring, so we...

Bear Swamp at Red Lion Preserve (Section B) - Southampton/Tabernacle

Christmas Eve Eve, the oldest kid, a buddy, and myself went to try out the trails at Bear Swamp at Red Lion Preserve (Section B) (the various preserves at Bear Swamp Preserve are a bit confusing), located off of West Patty Bowker Road. Two short forked trails here, about a half mile apart...

Piney Hollow Preservation Area - Franklin Twp, NJ

Took all three of my boys out a few weeks back to check out the Piney Hollow Preservation Area off of Piney Hollow Road. The map says less than 2 miles of trails marked, but we managed just under four miles without hitting everything. Caught a beautiful sunset, which I managed a decent shot...

Pinelands People: Mike McCormick, The Hiker

Don't know if I deserve the promotion to "Pinelands People", but I do love it out there. :) Full article from Inside Jersey Magazine I think my 15 minutes of fame have to be coming to a close soon...

Mineral Springs Resorts in the pines

Just finished a book called They Took to the Waters by Harry Weiss and Howard Kemble (The Past Times Press - 1962) that explores the heyday of the mineral springs resort decades in New Jersey and the Philadelphia region of PA. Pretty interesting look at the old "spas" used for health (and by...

    Solar Eclipse 2017

At the last minute, decided to head to South Carolina for the eclipse with the family. Managed to get a 1 star hotel in Florence, about a half hour north of totality. Headed down and stayed with friends just outside DC on Saturday, ended up at the hotel in Florence on Sunday (which amazingly...

    Duckenhat

According to Bisbee's Sign Posts, it is in Woodland Township and a tributary of Burr's Mill Brook. He lists it as Duckinhat, with another record spelling it Duckinhack (it it were proper Dutch, it would be Duckinhoek). Burrs Mill Brook is listed as a tributary of of Friendship Creek in the...

Penns Hill Trail - Wells Mills County Park

Went out in the heat of late July (upper 90s with a enough humidity to smother you to death) to do the 8.4 mile Penns Hill Trail (or Marci Trail, depending if you believe the map or the signs at the trail). Despite heat, humidity, sun, and a brutal (but thankfully short) attack by pine flies...

Possible Government Shut-down may affect your weekend..

Disgusting. But I guess our state officials weren't planning on camping in any of the state parks this weekend themselves.

South Jersey man's hiking blog has half million fans, and climbing

Find them more comfortable when I'm not worried about distance or tough hiking. I've even done 50 miles on the AT with them when my boot broke at the last second. :)
