    Life after people

Interesting show. According to the scientists, most evidence of human civilization would be erased after 150 - 200 years. Landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State Building would be gone. It was kinda eerie to see the city in Russia which has been abandoned since the Chernobyl...

    Top Five

I was once told by a guide that the reason why people drop bottles, etc is because they get so heavy when they are empty. ;)

Glad you enjoyed your hike! The next stretch is basically the same - hardpacked, some hills. You pass a blue-blazed trail which will take you to the headquarters for the Lebanon State Forest (oops, I mean Brendan Byrne) where you can get maps, etc. You cross Route 72 and the trail...

    Quaker Soap

Ever since I was knee-high to grasshopper I've heard it called that. I read somewhere why it was called that and can't remember where. It was on a recent trek through the Pines the question popped into my head again....:( yet another mystery of the Pines :bang:

Askin a hard question - a bus wouldn't take you close enough. The #319 bus leaves from the Port Authority in NY and takes you to Atlantic City http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/bus/T0319.pdf Then you could take the NJ Transit train from AC to Hammonton....um, probably not much help, but it's a...

Not along the trail in this section. At Norlemon Road, to the right was the site of Old Halfway on Route 72. There used to be a tavern there but is no longer in evidence. John Bispham had a mill in the area of Bispham Mill Creek. The site is now covered by the Presidential Lakes development...

    Amputee hiker

The first five miles are a good place to start. It's a packed dirt trail through the woods with only short distances on a sand road and a paved road. The trail starts in Ongs Hat on Turkey Buzzard Rd across from Apanay's Cafe which is on Magnolia Rd. I suggest going to Apanays for breakfast...

    Puddles

Regarding puddles, the section of the Batona Trail near Ives Lake is flooded out. It's just past where the Highland Park Club used to be at Tub Mill Road and Martha Road (does anyone know when it burned down??) Anyway, the earthen dam that was constructed to hold the lake back has failed and if...

    Batsto Mansion

I was just down at Batsto this past weekend. The mansion is to be closed for about a year and a half I was told. The mansion, including the ice house, is now surrounded by a chain link fence.

    Apple Pie Hill

They must have cleaned it up - and glad to hear it. I agree the view from up there is incredible. :) That's the one thing I enjoy about walking the Batona Trail is the little differences in landscape as you traverse the Barrens.

    Short Hike

There is one near 563 - it was a pond 20 years ago now just a very large depression. The other is past Bull Creek just before Washington Road. Regarding your second query, I walked the whole trail 20 years ago. I've since hike from Ongs Hat to Evans Bridge since Thankgiving. By developed road...
