    Do you believe in aliens?

I for one say there has to be something (or someone?) out there..to quote George Carlin: "If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little."

    Fort Dix, Mcguire, Lakehurst

Interesting. I kinda miss seeing the A-10's fly over like when I was younger. Just about every time I went into the Pines, there were one or two of them flying over from McGuire.

Hints of Places Here and There

Arthur Pierce states in Iron in the Pines, there was a Washington Forge along the Batsto River, north of Quaker Bridge. I think this may have been another name for Lower Forge. Perhaps that is what he was referring to...

    Making Bloom Iron

I came across an explanation for the tree at Martha today. In the "Journal of Chemical Education" from 1930 was the following" "...first furnaces were in many cases large gum trees hollowed out and lined with clay. The hearth was of clay a foot thick..." The furnace had a hearth of clay at...

    Eagle's Nest Destruction

Sounds like a plan  Ought to find the person and seize their house - turn it into a recovery center for wounded animals.

Yes - 20 years ago. I should have a picture of it around here someplace. If I can find it, I'll post it here.

    Searching For 3 Gun Clubs

Nice post. There was a gun club located near Ives Lake in Bass River State Forest. It was there twenty years ago and since that time has burned down. Not sure when. It was called the Highland Park Field & Stream Club across from where Tub Mill Road joins Martha Road.

    danger in the pines?

Listen, strange women lyin' in ponds distributin' swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate of the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

    Life after people

The only problem with cats is they were worshipped by the Egyptians and are never going to let us forget it. ;)

    Life after people

I thought that was an interesting idea...and the way the skyscrapers would become a whole new form of vertical ecosystem. Then I thought that after the structures fail, whole ecosystems would be wiped out. Even after man is long gone, we can still leave a mark......

    Amputee hiker

If it has pink blazes, it's the Batona Trail...if not then it's something else. I'm not sure what the second trail could be. The Batona continues closer to 72, joins the Cranberry Trail (red blaze), follows it to the end then turns right toward Pakim Pond.

    danger in the pines?

There's nothing like a walk through the Barrens....I practically grew up in the woods and loved to poke through the cedar bogs and just generally explore. It can be a tiny bit disconcerting, especially in an area far away from a paved road without the sound of cars, for the uninitiated. I only...
