Cedar Swamp Trail - Great Cedar Swamp Unit - Cape May NWR

I was actually wondering that, my tree identification was never very good, but none of the trees looked straight enough to be cedars. I thought the whole point of a cedar was that they grew ramrod straight. No truth in advertising I guess! It's Northeast of there, directly East of Petersburg...

Request for Evidence from the Pinelands Preservation Alliance (PPA)

Propaganda is at its finest when folks believe it. Which is a shame. I've said it before, folks here and folks at the PPA are probably in agreement with the vast majority of things doing with the Pine Barrens.

Cedar Swamp Trail - Great Cedar Swamp Unit - Cape May NWR

Hiked this over Thanksgiving weekend, it's just a few minutes from Belleplain State Park in Cape May County (it's officially in Ocean View in Dennis Township). Short trail, only 1.2 miles, but a good mix of meadow, forest, and swampland (including, of course, cedars). The best...

A Walk On The Wild Side: Four Days In The Pine Barrens

Oh my gosh, that road walk. How I do not miss that stupid road walk. I've only ever gone all the way South to North. I like the easy day being last (Brendan Bryne Campground to Ong's Hat).

    New Sweden

I read that about 15 years ago, not much has stuck. Might be something to add to ol' Christmas list.

    New Sweden

Thanks Spring-Man! I never would have thought the Swedes made it that far in, but I guess with the Mullica family doing what they did, I should have known better. I didn't realize that the Steelmans would be of that ancestry, but there are certainly enough of them about!

    New Sweden

I figured as much at Fort Elfsborg, darn changing course of the Delaware. Apparently Fort Christina has no regular hours, which is annoying. I'd never heard of Grand Sprute, but it looks interesting! http://www.nj.searchroots.com/Gloucesterco/swedesborohistory.htm

    Penn State Forest Hike

I use Faststone Photo Resizer. It's free (download.com), the settings are pretty simple on resizing, it gives you an option to watermark, and it will resize your photos en-masse instead of one at a time, which saves a TON of time. Lots of similar programs out there.

    New Sweden

Glory Dei (Old Swedes Church) in Philadelphia. Built in 1677 by an already established congregation (predating the establishment of Pennsylvania by 4 years and of Philadelphia by 5 years). The present building built in 1700, and has obviously undergone renovations. The baptismal font and some...

    Destruction at Friendship

I used to love photographing that step, I was sad when it wasn't there anymore. Something about a step up to a door that no longer exists.

    New Sweden

I've been slowly building up a minor New Sweden obsession over the last year or so, I figured I'd share the insanity. It's not the Pines, but it's pretty interesting! I started with two books - "The Swedes and Finns of New Jersey" by the Works Progress Administration (1938)...

    Mary Lee is visiting

A really excellent book, I love how the author takes you through the events, it doesn't read like a history book at all.

There is no purpose to using the beer drinking icon, I've just always wanted to use it.

    New Member status

Just out of curiosity, when does "New Member" come off your profile? I don't base a lot of my self worth off of online forum labels, but after 11 years of posting, I'm just trying to figure out how much longer I have to hang out with you bums... :D :guinness:

    The Sale of Atsion Furnace

Is this along the Mullica River Trail? I feel like it looks really, really familiar.
