My first trip to the Pines 06/03/06

If you're looking for Timber Rattlers and Milk snakes... i know there are some nice populations in New York, PA, and CT. I've never found a milk or rattler in NJ (where i live), but in one trip to PA i scored both.

My first trip to the Pines 06/03/06

I've found 6 worm snakes in the past 3 years in the Pines- 2 this year under boards. They like cover adjacent to marshes and swamps with a high ammount of understory growth.

    conspicuous by its absence...?

I personally have no experience with finding corns, so I don't know when they are active. But according to Carl Kauffeld's "snakes and snake hunting" they're active right after the moon goes down, and probably throughout the night. He's only ever found 2- both at Crossley, road cruising.

    conspicuous by its absence...?

Corn snakes, are in fact attracted to hollowed out railroad ties for many reasons. For one, there isn't much to hide under in the Pines to get away from the summer heat...there aren't lots of rocks, so where else to go then to ties? RR Ties also provide a good place for Corns to lay their eggs...

A good first hour in the pines

Dragoncjo....about the painted turtle... It's funny how many reptiles/amphibians can survive in Brack/Salt water habitats. My first ever black rat snake was actually IN a salt marsh while i was out birding, basking on top of some dead, pushed over weeds. 4' and healthy. The same day I found...

    The amazing diving duck bird

Yeah, diving ducks are sweet. At a pond near my house a big flock of about 12-20 ring-necked ducks wintered out. They also dived for their food. I was herping out near Lake Lenape thursday with my friend Andrew, we ran within 15-20 feet of a Turkey! I never got so close to one, and was...

    Caterpillar

I'm not sure what kind it is, but i'm sure you can find out on the computer. I've found quite a few of those too, just make sure if you find a Saddleback Caterpillar don't touch it... my friend rubed against one a couple years ago and his arm swelled up for about a day, and he said it stung.

    water snakes

Some of the water snakes we found, and also a painted turtle decided to throw in there..in one of the pics you can see how wet i got catching the water snake. I can see getting soaked for something like a kingsnake or something, but a water snake? what was i thinking?

    water snakes

My friend Andrew and I went out Sunday looking for a Kingsnake...no luck with them, but found 9 Nerodia. One was a nice big one out basking after eating a frog, andrew was about to grab it but missed and i jumped in the water after him, was a pretty heroic catch! I'll post pics later.
