    Franklin Parker Preserve Foray

Last Saturday Ro and I were part of joint botanical/entomological group visit to FPP. At one point the crowd was inspecting flower species in an area with young, 6 to 7 foot Pitch Pines. I noticed some people photographing shoulder-high "candles" - new growth/inflorescences - on one tree...

    Lichens in Brendan Byrne

Saturday Ro & I enjoyed a morning in Brendan Byrne SF with Karl Anderson, learning how to identify lichens, their various shapes and habitats, etc. Fascinating. We saw lichens on trees, in tree bark crevices, on stone building walls, on concrete sidewalk. Lichens are a combination of a fungus...

    Paradise Lake/Camp Jam

Yesterday Ro and I were driving on US 206 and saw new signs at the Paradise Lake road, so we drove in. Close to the camp entrance there was a lot of grading, tree removal. We drove into the camp, at the little guard house there was a sign "Camp Jam". Much grading, etc., but no new buildings...

    Unexpected Road

This strangely named road starts on Rte 54 and runs roughly northwest. Anyone have info on why the strange name? Speaking of which, we noticed a street sign in Glamssboro: "No Name Road". That set some kind of a record. There must be an interesting story behind why it got that moniker.

    Spring Ephemerals

Other places have flowers for spring ephemerals; the Pines have flag displays. Photo below was taken on the east side of Chatsworth-Tuckerton Road just east of intersection with Lost Lane. Picture was taken on 20 Mar 2017. There was another of these a bit further east - didn't have means to...

Pickle Factory Pond & Paper Factory Road

While wandering around our favorite NJ area - Delaware Bay shore - we passed over Pickle Factory Pond dam, and noticed the concrete building ruins at the dam and adjacent woods. Was there really a pickle factory there? When? Any other interesting stuff about it? Ro also noticed that the road is...

New York Public Library Digital Maps Release

Ro found a newspaper release about the NYPL making available on-line 20,000 digitized maps in high definition. Here's the map link: <http://www.openculture.com/2014/03/new-york-public-library-puts-20000-hi-res-maps-online.html>. A bonanza for map freaks like me, but just another demand on...

    Martha Bridge

Saw a sign on the sand road leading out of the parking lot for the start of the Batona Trail off Stage Road: "Martha Bridge 7.7 miles". Puddles on road too daunting for our new Escape. So, where is Martha Bridge? It's not on my Delorme map.

    Concrete Ship

Ro & I were on a birding/photography trip along the coast - Avalon to Cape May - last Sunday. We stopped at Cape May Point - only a few Herring Gulls. The concrete ship wreck is slowly disappearing, so we took pictures to record it as of January 2016.

    Kinkora Rail Trail

Picture below was taken looking west on Island Road in Mansfield Twp just over the line from Springfield Twp. I'd thought the County project would extend along the old right away alongside Columbus road in Springfield Twp since there's a paved section running from Jobstown to the Township park...

    New bolds Corner NIKE Site

Attached is a picture taken on 04 Dec 2015 of the demolition of the NIKE radar site on the northwest corner. I was curious to see what had happened to the missile bunkers but believe they may have been located elsewhere in the overall NIKE complex, most of which is gone. Put this up for posterity.

Our Macs format fotos in jpeg and offer export in TIFF, PDF, etc., but not jpg. Tried to post a jpeg foto on here and it was rejected. Ben said to use jpg, but I couldn't find a translator. Finally I looked up "jpeg/jpg" on Wikipedia and found out - THEY'RE THE SAME THING! So I erased the...

Yesterday Ro spotted 3 White Throated Sparrows in our back yard - facing the preserve in back of us. They're here over 3 weeks earlier than their usual appearance from up North. Do they know something about the coming winter?
