    Signs along Highways

Thanks, Pine Baron. That snippet of dialog from Cars captures it perfectly. I think I love a country lane because it shrinks my world. It lets me fool myself for a time into thinking life still revolves around small communities joined by dirt roads full of mystery and promise. Of course, you...

    Signs along Highways

Fascinating examples, Jerseyman. Thanks for posting them. I guess one way to put it is that directions have always been about landmarks, and now signage has replaced natural features in that role.

    Snow ??

Nice, Boyd! My Dad had a big 5 hp Ariens when I was a kid and we lived in upstate NY. That thing would chew through three feet, no problem. I have a baby Toro, the kind with a one-piece collector/impeller, manual chute, maybe a 10" opening. So I have to do it when the snow gets that deep, and I...

    Snow ??

They upgraded to a blizzard warning in NYC. I've been reading the forecaster discussions since early last night, and they had been talking about doing that. I guess this morning's model runs pushed them over the edge. Right now we have 3-4" on the ground, snowing lightly with a light breeze out...

    Computer

The boot drive is the storage media on which the operating system is stored, and which contains a little chunk of code that gets everything going when you power on the system. In almost all computers today the storage is a mechanical rotating hard disk, but you can also boot off of...

    A White Blanket of Beauty

I was pleasantly surprised to find that almost all the waterholes were easily detectable from the flatness of the snow and in most cases some slushing right over the middle. Stumps are probably my number one concern on a road like Mount, in conditions where you can't always tell quite exactly...

    The House on Loon Lake

I happened to catch this episode of This American Life on NPR (WHYY) on my way to the pines Sunday. I think those of you who share my fascination with abandoned buildings will also get a kick out of it. http://www.thislife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?episode=199 The full episode is available on a...

    Signs along Highways

Jerseyman, you never cease to amaze me. So much so, in fact, that my saying "you never cease to amaze me" has taken on the flavor of a cliche :). It's not within my abilities to continue to unearth superlatives to heap on the topic. You're a master of your craft, and it's a craft I have lately...

    Computer

As a developer I run a ton of software every day, from compilers to database tools, multiple remote desktop sessions, browser windows, etc. I have Windows 7 Enterprise with 8 GB of DDR3, and I have _never_ seen it use more than 40%. I think 6 GB is the sweet spot for Windows 7 at this time. If...

    A White Blanket of Beauty

After waiting years for a good snowfall to occur at the right time of the week, so that I could get down to the pines while it was still fresh, it finally happened. Sunday morning I headed down to my friend Jack's place in Cherry Hill. I was struck by the definite change in the amount of snow as...

    Snow ??

They can't be that specific, but that's how the math comes out when they run the models, and then later the models are proven wrong :).

    John deere junket

Lots of memories in this thread :). We used to bumper skate the buses all over town when the roads were snow covered. Nobody ever died in my presence, but it doesn't take much imagination to see it happening :).

    John deere junket

My old man was looking at 70 year-old Farmalls last year for his place in Quebec. I think tractors only die if you stop using them.

    John deere junket

That's awesome, Largo! Reminds me of winter days on my uncle's farm in Michigan. In fact, when I was a young kid in upstate New York my dad used to tie our ten-foot bobsled to the back of his Ford Pinto and drag loads of kids all over the neighborhood. Imagine what people would say about that today!

    life after people

I thought it was a cute idea for a single show. Making a series out of it? Just wierd. But then that's the Nostradamus Channel these days.

    Anybody remember watching this?

I have a photo of that mill at 1:30 on the wall of my office. And that guy at 2:00 looks like Steve Jobs. :). Overall watching this makes me nostalgic in a melancholy way.

Apple Pie Hill Tower Smashed Again

Social security numbers are not very secret anyway. See Schneier on Security for an interesting discussion thread. Your chances of hitting a valid number by digit substitution are probably around 1 in 4, and the chances of that number identifying someone who is of legal age and has purchasing...

    Flood paddle

They saved the sister when she was about six feet from the edge. The first NJ guy climbed over the rail and literally just hooked her thumb. He thought he was going to lose her so he shouted and NJ guy #2 climbed over and grabbed her wrist. The boy went over and was picked up by the Maid of the...

    Flood paddle

Yeah, awesome almost isn't enough of a word. I took my own kids there a few years back and they really enjoyed it. We took the tunnel tour behind the falls, and the ride on the Maid of the Mist. The cable-car over the whirlpool was closed due to wind, which I sort of didn't mind. It was on that...

    Flood paddle

Mine probably stems back to some early experience too, although if so I've forgotten it. I visited Niagara with my family when I was really young. That could certainly have done it. What with the falls, the whirlpool, the hydro canal (a 100' deep slot through solid bedrock that runs for five or...
