    My that's a large spider

I took a close look at the Wolf. Several sites say that the Fishing Spider is often mistaken for a Wolf. The Wolf isn't as large, and the carapace doesn't seem quite right. My money is still on Fishing Spider.

Ah, some nice pieces there for sure. I agree that area seems like the center of activity.

    My that's a large spider

Easily the biggest arachnid I've ever found in a place I was living, and that includes eight months in the Caribbean one year :). My wife and kids were sure he was deadly. I told them it's the small ones that get you, not the big hairy ones. If he's a Fishing Spider then they are harmless...

    My that's a large spider

I caught this fellow in the family room last week and ejected him from the house. Either he's back or he has an identical cousin. For comparison purposes those linoleum squares are 4" on a side, so he is running a little over 2". Any of you bug guys want to weigh in on the ID? My...

Red Oak Grove and Howardsville 5-26-08

Ben, are those graves associated with Union Clay, or Red Oak Grove? Is that the site Beck alluded to? It must be. Edit: I went back and re-read the section of Forgotten Towns, and I think I had his description of what he found at Union Clay confused with Red Oak Grove. I didn't explore much...

That's excellent, Guy. Thanks for posting that. The locations of the structures make perfect sense in terms of what is out there now. I find the easternmost structure interesting. That corner of the north meadow is pretty wet now, and I wonder what that lone building was out at the end of that loop.

    Friday Ride

I use all my fuel getting to the pines. What I burn once I get there is a maybe a quarter of the total for the day :).

Yeah, lots and lots of shotgun shells out there, and the plowing explains why there are so many fragments of brick and glass scattered about.

Ah, ok, I got it. :). Thanks. That explains the newer appearance of it. I knew it wasn't period by any means.

    Friday Ride

Great pics, Jeff. I think exploring the pines on an enduro would be just about the perfect way to do it.

I didn't realize until I looked at that aerial, and then went and looked at a topo, that those bogs once ran nearly all the way down to 72. You can clearly see the track of the power lines. Thanks for pointing that out. Was Howardsville destroyed in a fire? Or did the state plow it under to...

Thanks for filling that in, Guy. I think that steel pipe is a different one from the one I took a pic of. The coloring and diameter are different, and the one I imaged is sticking out of the bank almost horizontal to the ground.

Some pretty impressive stones there! Thanks for the pics. I wonder if the pole is the same one I saw? The one lying on the ground appears to have been cut down, as the end is semi-finished.

Red Oak Grove and Howardsville 5-26-08

Ok, on to Red Oak Grove and Howardsville. My visits to both yielded much less dramatic finds than at Union Clay, although there was evidence of historical activity in each location. My main interest at Red Oak Grove was to search the site thoroughly for any structural remains, cellar holes...

Jerseyman, I grabbed the GPS coords of the pipe dump, and will send them to you in a PM after lunch, along with a basic description of the location. I did not check the 'Y' pipe for markings, other than to scan the surface. I was reluctant to roll it, or anything else there, over to check the...

    Union Clay Company 5-26-08

Yesterday I went to the pines alone with the object of visiting three sites I had made brief visits to previously: Red Oak Grove, Union Clay, and Howardsville. I figured that by going alone I could take my time and canvass the sites thoroughly. I was armed with GPS plots of the corner points at...

    The Whiting Tract

Nor did I. Great report, Guy! It's interesting to see how closely they packed that housing development up against the boundaries of the plot.

    New Jersey Session Laws

I don't think there's much argument. The average educated nineteenth century person used language much more richly than a similarly educated person of today. Of course, that person was more a rarity then too, and the people at the other end of the education scale used language less fluently and...
