    Unfinished places.

A lot of the development by the big players like K. Hovnanian and Toll Bros. has just stopped up here. There are empty construction sites in a number of places. I suspect that their access to capital is pretty much non-existant at the moment. I'm sure that, assuming they remain solvent, they...

    Any near Tuckerton?

Most of those areas are failed land development schemes. There are four or five that come to mind, and there were probably more than that. If you scan around in Google Earth they aren't hard to locate.

Thanks for the tip, Boyd, and you're right: I should read the directions. I haven't saturated my clothes with it, and I have been careful about bare skin, but I do spray my pants while wearing them.

Gas prices are so high so let me spend $7k on a Geo instead

I work from home full-time at the moment. It has its pluses and minuses. I love grabbing a cup of coffee and a bagel and worrying about the shower later :). On the other hand... the kids come home, and there's summer coming up.

That's a tough commute, Ben. My brother did that for years from Cherry Hill to NYC, and then from the Princeton area to NYC. I'm amazed that you have any time left to work on this site and explore the woods!

Tracks blocked by thousands of trees

They've been clearing out under a bunch of mainline utility corridors up here as well. Nearly all the transmission lines in this area have had the ground cleared under them.

19 on the FJ, so that explains the difference.

I love the truck, and the way it handles, so much (even a year later) that I will keep driving it to the point where the kids are getting hungry :). But yeah, it's a pig and a half. Nice power/torque curve, though!

    Native American Shell Middens

I think 'savage' is a term that indicates the extent to which the European mind preferred organized violence to tribal mayhem. 'Civilized' is a trickier one, in my view. If a component of it is the gaining of technological control over the physical environment, leading to a higher individual...

How big is the tank in that Rubi? I'm running about $50-ish to fill from 1/4 or less. I didn't think the Wranglers were that bad on mileage. The FJ is not good at all. 4L V6 + slabs of metal facing the wind == sluurp.

I use Permanone, which is a pyrethrin-base I believe. Same as permathrin if I recall correctly. Walmart sells it under the Repel brand for about $6 a can. I have a few cans in the truck at all times. I didn't realized it lasted through washings. I pretty much always reapply from the knees down...

    Kiln? Furnace? Or something else?

It's nice to have an area like that close by. When I don't have the whole day for a trip south I can be in the vicinity of Millbrook in about half an hour. That kiln isn't far off a trail, so it may very well be the one you spotted, German.

    Any near Tuckerton?

Wel, here's your first assignment :). Stop by Buzby's Store in the center of Chatsworth before 2:00 PM on most weekdays, introduce yourself to Marilyn Schmidt, and pick up a copy of George D. Fleming's "Brotherton," a history of the only reservation in New Jersey (at the location of what is now...

    Martha Furnace; advice requested

I think you'll have a hard time finding a road that doesn't give you a lot of what you want :). The Martha area is interesting, even though the ruins are fenced in and buried. You'll see a lot of slag thereabouts on the road, and along the river. A little east of there is the site of Calico...

    McKenzie River trail 5-3-08

I love mountain rivers. Great photos of the northwest. I had the opportunity to do some exploring up that way about twenty years ago. Great country.

Welcome aboard, Star. You won't find a better source of information, or a more respectful and helpful group of people to get it from. I think the thing about Wierd New Jersey that gets me, and probably many of us, is the sensationalism. The things they cover are, for the most part, not wierd...

    Gypsy Moth activity

I have two trees in my front yard that have seed sacks, and I have caterpillars in the yard as of the weekend too. Not sure if they are Gypsy Moths. However, last night it fell below 40F up here on the mountain, and today there are a lot of them all clumped together and not moving. So I think...
