    Beware of Beaver

I haven't, but I have seen coons staggering around in the open, and I know exactly what you mean. If you see those guys out in the middle of the day you know something's wrong.

    Beware of Beaver

We've had a few encounters with foxes and coons over the years that were not behaving normally. Fortunately I never had an opportunity to find out if any of them had rabies. I tell my daughters that if they see a wild animal in the open, and it doesn't run away, just assume there's something...

    Pine Barren Glory Days

Reading this post is pretty amazing. My family moved to South Jersey in 1980 when I was 20 and bouncing in and out of college and various jobs. So I don't have any history there from the seventies, but you guys all look like my friends from that time, when I lived in Indiana, down to the hair...

    Delaware and Atlantic Canal

I think I am guilty of wishing there were a connection :). The 1839 map showing the D&A route, and the 1880 NYT article on a proposed canal, aren't as alligned as I thought. The D&A comes out down around Manahawkin, whereas the Times states that the proposed canal would have come out further...

    Delaware and Atlantic Canal

Thanks for that, Jerseyman. You can clearly see the proposed route of the D&A. The whole thing still strikes me as a little off. How much of the Kinkora line was built? Are we discussing an occasion in U.S. history when someone seriously proposed replacing a railroad with a canal?

    Tuckerton Stage Road

Thanks for posting that, Relayer. Very interesting.

    Delaware and Atlantic Canal

Thanks for the insights, Jerseyman. I misread your original reply. So the cartographic error was in labelling it a canal rather than a railroad? I find it interesting that the 1880 NYT piece talks about what sounds like the same route, but for a canal. If there were already parts of a railroad...

    Delaware and Atlantic Canal

Seems like this archival article from the NYT reflects that desire to shorten the path to the Atlantic from Philly, and I guess my earlier disdain for the notion sort of shortchanged the costs of rounding Cape May. However this piece is nearly 40 years younger than the map I linked. I'm still...

    Delaware and Atlantic Canal

I was surfing through the map collection at the LoC today when I came upon this map of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, circa 1839 or so. What caught my eye was a solid line across southern NJ from a point on the Delaware river north of Mt. Holly to the shore at Long Beach. I thought it must be a...

Burlington County bogs produce a bountiful crop

Dragonfly, I really enjoyed the interview, as well as the one with Marilyn Schmidt. She has a fascinating background, and an amazing range of interests and skills. I guess that comes from a long and intellectually engaged life.

    Hand-made vacuum tubes

You old-schoolers will get a kick out of this. It's not often I will sit through a 17 minute internet video, but the technical skills on display here, as well as the lyrical presentation, make it quite a treat. http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2008/01/make_your_own_vaccum_tube.html

    Governor's Speech

The problem is that government always assumes that the behavior of the taxed is inelastic. Hey, if we raise tolls 50% we'll get 50% more money! Yeeha! What they will likely get instead is some percentage increase much less than 50%, and a lot more traffic on 295, 1, 206, 95 in Pennsy, etc...

    Sunglass Shot

Caption: A massive energy discharge in the vicinity of Ong's Hat today was captured on film by an amateur photographer. State officials have not yet issued an explanation, however concentric rings of toppled and tangled pines have reminded some of the Tunguska event in Siberia.

    Apple Pie Hill

I'm glad to hear it was clean. Last time I was there we saw a lot of litter, including many old computer monitors that had been tossed from the tower. The view is incredible. I was there with my kids in the early fall, and the young man in the box invited us up. They got a kick out of seeing...

    Kicked out of Carusoville

Interesting that Google Maps tags that as Aserdaten, which as far as I know is a little south of there across the bridge.

    Computer Help Needed

Ah, yeah, I should have mentioned the PSU fan. Usually if that fan isn't working the PSU is dead, which is why it didn't occur to me. Glad you got it worked out!

    Computer Help Needed

James, sorry I didn't see this earlier. There can be various fans connected to various pins. The most common scenario in bundled boxes is to have a three-wire connector from the fan assembly on the back of the chassis down to a three-pin header on the motherboard. This connects to a voltage...

    Computer Help Needed

Unfortunately these machines don't always use stock parts, and the bundle boxes from Compaq, HP, Dell, etc., are the worst offenders in using non-standard stuff. A typical back of the case fan is an 80mm, but there are many systems that use 90mm or 70mm fans, and some that use 120mm fans...

    Question about Cedar Grove Park

Well it was a chase that ended with the goose in the net, so all's good as far as I am concerned :). And I have a feeling Guy won't complain, as you've added to his little black book :).
