Industries in the Pines - Ghost Towns

Yes, I have! Like with my friend Barbara Solem, I met him on one of his tours. He's a nice guy and has a wealth of knowledge about the area. Barbara told me that he frequently helped her when she did her Ghost Towns tours. Barbara decided not to do her bus tours any longer so she gave Jeff her...

Pine Barrens Jamboree October 9, 2021

I met Barbara when I did her Ghost Towns bus tour in 2019. Very cool lady, and she knows so many people in the Pine Barrens! She's been inspiring me to start writing about the area.

Industries in the Pines - Ghost Towns

A friend and I did a guided bus trip a few Sundays ago exploring some of the abandoned industrial sites in the area. I've read Barbara Solem's Ghost Towns book and many of these sites are described in it. Very cool to see them in person. We visited Deep Run Cranberry Bog, Atsion Village, Hampton...

Lovely day kayaking on the Mullica up to Lock's Bridge

That's neat! I want to get a kayak next year. I'll look into that as an option. I live in a townhouse. I can easily store a kayak in my backyard but getting a regular one in and out might be awkward.

Lovely day kayaking on the Mullica up to Lock's Bridge

How was it with an inflatable kayak? I don't see them used much on the rivers here.

Lovely day kayaking on the Mullica up to Lock's Bridge

I think she actually stayed put for a while until another kayaker came up behind me. She sort of posed with her feet out like this watching me. A lot of the turtles that day seemed sluggish. It was cold in the morning, and I think they were sunning themselves to warm up.

Lovely day kayaking on the Mullica up to Lock's Bridge

And then I was in a walking boot followed by a leg brace until Labor Day. Worse was that it was my driving leg so I pretty much spent the summer hanging around the house. It was just a stupid accident. I slipped in the mud, fell hard, and badly twisted my ankle. My fibula snapped from the torsion.

Lovely day kayaking on the Mullica up to Lock's Bridge

I paddled a few hours on the Mullica up to Lock's Bridge a few weeks ago, my first time kayaking since breaking my ankle right after Memorial Day. Beautiful day! Here are two of my favorite photos, and I wrote a post about it as well: Kayaking on the Mullica River.

Pine Barrens Jamboree October 9, 2021

I think I'm going to check this out tomorrow. I'm friends with author Barbara Solem, and she will be there. She's very knowledgable about Batsto and the Pine Barrens in general.

Some rare feathered visitors are at Forsythe

Apparently, the avocet is more frequently seen at times, but this is not its typical range. I've made quite a few visits to Forsythe this year and had some really cool encounters. My favorite so far was when a bald eagle I was photographing got curious about my camera and hovered over me. I also...

Some rare feathered visitors are at Forsythe

In the first shot in my post, it's the bird on the left. That's the closest picture I got. There's another shot of one in my blog that's a bit further away. And also got this one.

Some rare feathered visitors are at Forsythe

I spent the day bird watching recently at Forsythe in Galloway and got to see a couple of birds who rarely come this far south: the Roseate Spoonbill and American Avocet. Beautiful! I also saw many Great and Snowy Egrets, some cormorants, a Glossy Ibis, and a Diamondback Terrapin. The green...

    Music for the day

Good morning! I started a blog earlier this year called Beach and Barrens that focuses on the Jersey Shore and New Jersey Pine Barrens. My most recent post profiled folk singer/songwriter Valerie Vaughn (aka New Jersey's Troubadour). I thought some people here might be familiar with and...

    Beaver tail slapping

I spotted some beavers at Goshen Pond one evening last April and got some shots of a tail slap.

Anyone know what kind of frog this is?

I took a photo of this tiny frog a few summers ago. I was wondering if anyone knew what it was.

    Mayflies at Goshen Pond

I lucked out one evening this past April when I went for a hike around Goshen Pond and walked into a mayfly hatching. Magical!
