    An old cranmeadow

Interesting. I thought you said previously that you lived not far from where Gravelly Hollow used to intersect Atsion Road. I would have thought that acreage would have been more closely associated with the Taunton Tract but now that I think about it, Taunton was probably out of blast decades...

    Jersey Devil-real or unreal?

Did you ever hear two raccoons fighting (or mating - who knows) in the middle of the night. It is truely an unearthly sound. It reminds me of someone rubbing damp fingertips down a window pane but much louder! Scared the *#!@ out of me before I got the lights on and saw what it was.

    An old cranmeadow

I grew up at Taunton Lake almost 40 years ago and can remember as a kid hearing Atco in the evenings as well. I think alot of factors affect how well the sound travels. The amount of foliage on the trees seems to make a big difference. Much has changed in that area in the last 40 years...

    Hampton Station and Rider's Switch

Is it true that in "The Trail of the Blue Comet" they say that Hampton Station was in operation from the 1860's until about 1875, then reopened at the same location a few decades later as "Rider's Switch" or "Rider's Siding"? If someone who has that book could check and please let me know. The...

State's biggest cranberry grower hopes to acquire land, expand

You know, I remember seeing that property (it was Sim Place) for sale on ebay about 2 years ago. I think the opening bid was like 6 million but then a month or so later, it was still for sale but the minimum price was 30 M. It is my understanding that the State once tried to grab that property...

    Union Clay Gun Club

I began hunting (deer) 5 or 6 years ago and that quiet time in the woods is just awesome. The bonus is that the family enjoys the venison as much as I do. Even bought a bow last year! Would love to go out for ducks sometime. Having an excuse to watch the sun rise over some old cranberry bog...

Need some help with route planning

I think if I were going, I would follow Woodjin suggestion down to New Gretna but then make a right heading toward Wading River and Batsto. After crossing the Wading River, I would probably make a left onto river road and cross the Mullica at Lower Bank. Then, head on into Green Bank. I love...

708-acre (cranberry) farm to be protected

That farm (originally known as Quoexin) was one of the three Evans and Wills properties. Friendship and Willow Farm (Kings Grant) being the other two. Good to see it preserved. Some of the earliest cranberry bogs in the state were started there!

    Building a Furnace

Goofy Question: How hard do you think it would be the build a small scale bog iron furnace? Do you think that a 3' round 5' high fire brick furnace could get hot enough to get the mixture molten? How much smoke do you think it would make? Just curious if it could be done.

    Sim Place Sold?

I must have had my head in the sand out here in Tabernacle! Had I become a member of this outstanding site earlier, I guess I wouldn't miss such things. Thanks. I guess the old place must have changed alot since National Geographic did that article 30+ years ago. Probably not much out...

    Sim Place Sold?

Someone told me that Bill Haines (from Hog Wallow) bought Sim Place. Does anyone know if this is true? I've heard so much about the place but have never been out there. Its private property and has been well gated for years. Has anyone ever been out there before and could describe what's left?

    Harris Station - a Theory

AJ Rider died in 1929 (coincidentially the same year that the Blue Comet began its operation). He was 86 at the time. I don't think he could have been very active at that point. He was the only honorary member of the growers association up til then and was the president of the association in...

    Harris Station - a Theory

Sue, Someone posted information about the Sandy Ridge (later Carranza) Station that came from the book "Trail of the Blue Comet". It was located somewhere between Carranza Road and Harris Station. There was probably just a siding there. They mentioned the dates that it was in operation and...

    Harris Station - a Theory

Yes of course you are right about the forge and furnace. But Hampton Station couldn't have had anything to do with the iron industry there anyway (it was way too early right?) Though I keep forgetting just how late the Blue Comet began service, (1929) Hampton must have still been a busy little...

    Harris Station - a Theory

It makes sense that stops at these stations would be infrequent. I'm suggesting that some stations in the pines probably had no structure there at all and I doubt that there were many (if any) waiting passengers there. Does anyone know for sure if the Blue Comet ever even stopped at a place...

    Harris Station - a Theory

Hampton Theory #2 Did you ever see on the maps the road called Rider's Switch in the vicinity of Hampton? It makes a direct line from Hampton Furnace to the railroad and is about half the distance it would be to get to High Crossing. Doesn't it make sense that rider's switch was just that - a...

    Harris Station - a Theory

Another thing. Has anyone ever given any thought to why there would even be a Hampton Station? The iron industry was gone by then and the only activity I can think of for miles around were the Rider/Wilkerson bogs there. I don't believe many of these places were train stations like you might...

    Harris Station - a Theory

I think that you may have had it right the first time. It would make more sense that items shipped from Hampton would have been loaded at High Crossing (probably 2 miles away). Harris Station (later known as Pine Crest I think) was just south of Apple Pie Hill. If, in fact, Harrisville carted...

Most Remote Area in the Pines

Does anyone have any idea what those clearings are? I wonder if they are "feed strips" put there by deer hunters in the area. Anyone know?

Friendship Article in SJ Courier Post

Guy, You must know then that King's Grant was built on one the other Evans and Wills cranberry bogs. 1000 acres in that piece. As a kid I would frequently drive past the old packing house that was across the street and even then wanted to stop and look around but never did. Do you have any...
