    closed to public

Thanks, I'll check it out on Friday. I've waded it this year, but haven't put the canoe on it in a long time.

    closed to public

I'm off this Friday, does anyone know if Chatsworth Lake (the big lake on 532, not the little pond on the closed road) is closed also? I was going to canoe and fish it, if it's open. Thanks, Greg

    New Kayak

I mostly canoe alone and also sit in the bow seat facing backwards. Since I fish, for me a canoe is much better than a kayak. More room to spread out. I do take a yearly kayak trip with my daughter on the Batsto. Last year we had a rental story. The couple in front of us were getting set up and...

    closed to public

Hmm, if it's the old road on the lake side of 532, I wonder if the lake is also closed to public access now.

    closed to public

I haven't been there since May or June, is it closed (no tresspassing) or just blocked to vehicle access? The road has been blocked whenever I've been there, but there were no signs saying the area was closed to foot traffic. It's the road right near the canal, correct? I've carried trash out of...

    onPoint Tactical

I've learned to be very careful in swamps. A few years ago I was in the Martha area. It was very cold and I thought the ice was thick enough. I was pretty far into the swamp and my hiking stick went through. I was easily able to push it all the way in to the mud (about 6 feet). If I had fallen...

Ben, on your hike in Mordecai, were you hiking alone? I often hike by myself, and have a habit of getting sidetracked (ok, lost) on bushwacking excursions. With the age we live in, I now print out a map (google or terraserver) of the area I'm in. I've gotten lost a few times because of not...

    Chigged!

From now to first frost, I do all my hiking on the Batsto River in my canoe!

    The Ramble Inn

Uncle Mikes closed for good a few years ago, it was still vacant the last time I drove down that way. I knew some people who wouldn't even drive past there, much less actually go in. I never heard the part about the gruesome discoveries.

    boating

Will you be fishing South Jersey? Most of the local WMA or state forest lakes I fish are paddle or electric motor only. Check out Union Lake WMA, though. I think they allow up to 10hp motors. I've never fished it, but I've heard it's a good spot. The link has directions. Greg...

    Wharton Wheeling

Fishing was good, once I got through the cloud of flies and got on the water. I fished until dark and caught 3 bass (small). I had a pickerel hit my worm, it was so small I think my worm may have been bigger than the fish:) The lake was a sheet of glass, I just sat and listened to the night...

Jim, First, congrats on the jeep. Good luck with it. Second, in your picture of the mullica the water looked pretty low. Did you notice any other streams or ponds in your travels, and how was the water level? Around me in Winslow they seem ok (for now). And lastly, amen on the flies. Went...

Lyme Disease - Do You Have IT too?

Dragonfly, I contracted Lymes in 1990. The diagnosis was made difficult in that I did not get the "bulls eye rash". Once diagnosed (by blood test), my doctor treated it very aggressively. I'd need to look at my records, but I was on a fairly high dose of antibiotics for at least 4 months (July...

    My that's a large spider

OK, we have a thread about ticks and chiggers, one about spiders that evolved into a decriptive discussion about maggots, and one about snakes. So now I'm going to bed scratching chigger bites and sick to my stomach. Isn't the internet wonderful? :)

    Batsto Africa, a PBX Hike

When they were babies, I had a backpack to carry my kids on my hikes. Like you said, it seems like yesterday but was 20 years ago. Now it's an occasional canoe trip or hike as both kids (a son and daughter) are grown up and busy.

    Lenape Canoe Company

hooky from work Tom sent me an e-mail at 3:15 yesterday that he was off work early. By 5 we were on Batsto lake in THAT canoe (I call it the bondo special). Lots of good times still left in that boat. We were on the water till dark, great evening!

Tom still has his Lenape Chief. It's a little banged up (it is over 30 years old!) but still usable.

Have ticks always been a problem?

I was out in the woods on Friday evening and Sunday afternoon, and no ticks. This morning I got one on me while driving to work! I got to work and felt it crawling on me. He must have gotten on me at some point this weekend and dropped off in my truck.

    My that's a large spider

I could make fun of Tom about spiders, but then he'd bring up all the times that snakes scared the daylights out of me and I made a fool of myself. Plus he's a lot bigger than me:)
