    Wind

Between 4 and 6 PM on Saturday the wind picked up, and the sky was really strange looking, I wish I had a camera. Black clouds with sun light on the cloud tops, looked very ominous. The wind blew part of our fence down, too.

    Young folks interested in hiking/camping/canoeing/etc?

As long as you don't add a gun to the duck blind part of the equation.

    Young folks interested in hiking/camping/canoeing/etc?

I used carry a hiking stick on my walks. Now I call it a cane.

    Someone's Last Stand

I know this sounds wierd, but when I saw the old stand picture, I thought of my oldest brother, who died in 1997. I still go to his old stand, near a spot we used to camp at and hunt together. His tree is still standing, and the stand steps are still there, and look like they'll remain for a...

    Pro at Work-Stay Clear

My wife and I made some dietary changes in 2005 due to some serious health issues that she had. Although we didn't change to vegetarianism, we did cut back on red meat, and changed to bison when we do eat it. We also try , within reason, to buy organic produce since we now eat so much more fruit...

    Snow storms are mythical things...

I'm jealous! I can't complain, though. I was off the last 3 Friday's (went to Forsythe twice and hiking at Batsto the other), so I guess it's my turn to work a Friday. Enjoy the snow.

    Eclipse

Nice picture LIP, thanks for posting. It cleared up around my way at about 9:30. Just in time for a good view.

So what are you doing for Valentines Day?

I guess my wife and I don't have a favorite. What we like about Forsythe is the variety. We saw flocks of 8 different types of ducks, some shore birds, herons, and songbirds that were impossible to id. We also like hawk watching there. The occasional eagle or falcon is a special treat. There is...

So what are you doing for Valentines Day?

What did you see at Forsythe? I've been there a few times this year and there is some great stuff on the sightings list.

Walking along a road : suspicious activity?

Funny you should mention that. Last week I had a State Trooper slow down as I was backing in to an opening in the woods to start a hike. I think he thought I was dumping something. He turned around about 1/2 mile away, came back and stopped. When he saw my hiking stick leaning against the truck...

OUCH! That's unbelievable that the ER doctor couldn't see that. Glad it sounds like you'll fully heal. Greg

    My bird feeder

We've had red bellies at our feeder occasionally, but I'm also noticing a lot more variety at the feeders. I've been seeing creepers and wrens, we never had those until this year. We also had a rabbit and squirrel problem at the feeder, until the Great Horned Owl moved in to the neighborhood a...

    Short Hike

We have trouble finding young people who want to do any field work, they want to stay in the office. I do underground electrical surveys (lifting manhole covers, verifying cables, etc...) and we can't find a younger person to help. I'm our youngest technical field surveyer (I'm over 50), and my...

    danger in the pines?

I thought it was just me. Also, though I didn't meet my wife in the pines, our second "date" was to one of my favorite spots in the pines for a hike. That was 33 years ago this week.

    Square concrete boxes

Here it is January and we're talking ticks and chiggers. Don't those little buggers ever take a break? I'm hiking tomorrow (day off work) and I'm thinking about getting out the permithrin.

    Survey WMA's

I filled out the survey for Winslow. They have also widened the roads there and they leave the area pretty tore up.

    Tick sighting

This past Friday I was at the wildlife refuge at Brigantine. It was still cold so I hiked through all kinds of brush and high grass and didn't give it a thought. I'm not sure I would do it today, though with the warm weather.

    Tick sighting

60 + degrees yesterday and I had the great fortune to have a half day at work. I spent a few hours in the woods and didn't pick up any unwanted critters (ticks, chiggers, etc...). Just in case, though, I had my lint remover with me, I think I got that idea from Teegate (thanks). All in all, it...
