    Friday Ride

Hey Furball, This year I am carrying a book with me, Wildflowers of the Pine Barrens of New Jersey by Howard Boyd. I am trying to identify the flowers in the pines that I've been seeing all these years. Ipecac Spurge was one of the first I ID'd this year (I'm keeping a log book). I'm enjoying...

    16' Old Town Canoe

I'll add my 2 cents, from my own experience. Will you be sliding it into a pick up truck or car topping it? If car topping, try lifting any boat you are considering. If you will be going alone, getting a 16' canoe, that weighs 70-90 lbs on to the top of a car by yourself can be a challenge...

    Greenwood Forest

The stuff I use says it will last thru washings, but also says to reapply every 2 weeks. It's permithrin based in a pump spray bottle, not sure of the brand.

    Turtle's

There are experts on this site that can correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've read their northern most range is coastal Virginia. Greg

Saw some nice golden club around Atsion lake this past weekend

I was at Batsto lake this past Friday and also saw quite a bit of golden club, as well as a few yellow water lillies (although most are still under water). The pickerel were also hitting just about anything I threw at them!

    High Tension Line

Winslow WMA has high tension lines and the utility keeps them cut pretty clear. The ground cover that grows attracts lots of deer. The only bad part is one of the lines passes over the boat launch at Oak Pond. I get static shocks from the line when unloading my canoe.

    Whites Bog and Buckingham, 4-19-08

I think safety zones are 450 feet. You're not allowed to cross the safety zone boundry with a loaded gun or nocked arrow, and you're not to shoot into the safety zone (makes sense). Greg

Introduction and a few newbie questions.

How far are you planning to hike? If you want to walk in the pygmy pines, I've been parking at a spot just off 539, just past Lucilles. It's part of the area that burned last year.

    New Gretna Mansion

Hmmm, 344.00. In New Jersey, that's about 2 days worth of property taxes for that house:)

    Teenager killed in atv accident.

http://www.courierpostonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080407/NEWS01/804070346/-1/towns82 My wife saw this last night. There are a lot of woods in that area that people ride in, including Winslow WMA. I see a lot of riders on the weekends in the WMA. This was really sad.

Article about NJ parks closing due to budget cuts

I thought it was just the facilities closing and not access to the parks. It's still a shame if the facilities close, though. Our summer vacation for many years was a 9 or 10 day camping trip at Belleplain. I hate to think of the families like us that planned their summer vacations at state...

    The Two trees at Washington

Hey Furball, Good to see you back on! Also saw your other post on the Washington area. That area is fairly close to home and I take a lot of solo hikes there. Lately I stick to the trails, not much bushwacking (hip problems). If you ever visit these parts, let us (Tom M. & I ) know. It would be...

    Railroaded

What year would that have been? Chatsworth lake and the surrounding area was a favorite camping area for me and my brothers. we had many fishing trips where we camped on the lake. Greg

    Things in perspective.

Not pine barrens related, but every once in a while something happens which puts life in perspective. Friday, I was hiking at Forsythe when my son called. He was in Maryland, on his way home from Kentucky for the holidays and was involved in an accident (him, 5 other cars and the dump truck that...

    Ticks?

The Walmart near me never has permethrin. Last year I purchased it online from www.forestry-suppliers.com. If you have trouble finding it, try them.

    Controlled burn?

I'm not sure if the Hay Road cut is a road providing access to remote areas for fire fighters or not. I know one of the fire cuts in Winslow is as wide as a road. Within a few weeks of it's completion, there was already fresh trash (mostly construction waste) dumped along the road. It gave the...
