    The Long and Piney road...

Enjoyed the pictures. You really had a great day for picture taking, the sky is crystal clear. Amazing how much like South Jersey your pines area looks.

    Piney Boy takes a holiday

Vacation We must be on the same vacation loop, just different years. Last year my wife and I went to Harpers Ferry and Antietam battlefield. I thought Antietam was one of the most thought provoking places I've ever been. We finished our trip with 4 days at Black Water Falls in WV, had a great...

    Got Stranded

Having been pulled out of sugar sand myself by a guy who wouldn't take anything, it is a good feeling to encounter someone like that. My car was so buried, I joked to my brother that we should kick some sand on the roof and leave it for some future generation to find. Our "good samaritan" hooked...

    Quaker Bridge to Batsto

Lot's of them. A lot of small painters. Some really large, smooth shelled turtles, I'm not sure what kind they were. All of them were really tame, they didn't splash into the water when we went past, just sat and watched us go past. Next trip I really need to carry a camera.

    Quaker Bridge to Batsto

My daughter and I did Quaker Bridge to Batsto on Friday, what a perfect trip. I often fish the lower Batsto, starting at the lake and going upstream a little then drift fishing my way back, I had forgotten how nice the upper part was. We had a great trip.

    Corzine won't veto Pinelands project

Pinelands Protection Act? What exactly is the Pinelands Protection Act mentioned in the article for if it's not used to protect the pines?

Batsto to Lower Forge hikethis past weekend

Your post brought to mind a past trip. My oldest brother, my youngest brother and I did that hike. I got no ticks, chiggers or flies and neither did my youngest brother. Thats because my oldest brother was the bug magnet, they all flocked to him. By the time we reached Lower Forge he was really...

    Quaker Bridge to Batsto

Water levels My daughter and I want to kayak next week, either Quaker Bridge to Batsto or Oswego to Harrisville. Anyone know if the Oswego water levels are high enough? The're good on the Batsto. Thanks

    Accidents

Wow, glad everyone is ok. I got a similar call last month from my daughter. She was in an accident, her and my son were both in the car. The hectic dead line at work suddenly lost all importance. I drove to the accident scene with my heart in my throat, thank God they were both ok. These things...

    Fort Mott

My wife has taken her 6th grade class there for trips, they always have a good time. I'll have to go next time, I haven't been there since I was a kid.

    Chigged.

The best way for me to beat the chiggers is to canoe instead of hike. Last Friday I had off from work and spent the day on (and in) the Batsto. Had a great day, and no chigger bites! The grassy area of the lake was blanketed in yellow flowers, not sure of their name. Lots of turtles sunning, saw...

    Chigged.

Chigger remedies Two years ago I got chewed up pretty bad and ended up at a dermatologist. He prescribed something called Olux (hope I spelled it right). It was hard to find, but it works really well on any insect bites. A word of warning about the chlorine remedy, a friend of mine burnt his...

    Summer Daze in the Pines

We camped at a small camp ground on the Schroon River in our pop-up. It's about 20 minutes from Lake George. The woods where I hiked was along the north western portion of Lake George. I was the only hiker out, and the quiet (except for frogs and birds) was almost overwhelming. I had lunch at a...

    Summer Daze in the Pines

I hear you about the heat and bugs. I just got back from a week in the Adirondacks in NY. It was hot and buggy there also, but the hiking was great, the country is just beautiful. Went white water rafting for the first time. I think I'll take the Batsto, but it was a lot of fun. I look forward...

    Campers at Columbus?

Pine Barrens memories Sean, Thanks for your posts. I am always fascinated that we all lived in such different areas and grew up to love the pines. I grew up in North Camden and moved to Brooklawn. I still remember trips to the pines as a kid. Now as an adult I daydream at work about hiking and...

    Oswego Kayak trip 7/4/06

I guess the original intent of these laws were to protect wildlife, I don't know. Awhile ago I was stuck in traffic in Lindenwold where there shouldn't be traffic jams. When I got to the front a huge snapping turtle was in the road trying to cross and the cars wouldn,t let it. I never thought of...

Towers of Fire: Iron Production in the Pine Barrens

There is a lot of the dark green glassy slag at Martha, but I've also seen something that's a very light shade of green with white spots. You can see what looks like air bubbles in it. It almost had a spongy look to it. Maybe it wasn't slag but some other waste byproduct from the furnace?

Towers of Fire: Iron Production in the Pine Barrens

furnace slag Thanks for the article. It is really interesting. I wonder what the difference in slag is between a furnace and a forge. I'm out at Martha Furnace a lot and the slag is all different colors. Did it depend on where the ore came from?

Need some info for a book

Zimmies memories Hey Furball, wow, lots of memories from time spent at Zimmies. How can I forget the mounting panic as it got dark and your brother was lost. Or a somewhat funnier story, the time I was there by myself during the week (not working, what a bum), and I was carrying my boat on one...

    Kayak Suggestions?

I fished for a few years out of an inflatable before I got my canoe and it worked out well. My main reason was storage. I can fish more areas now with a hardshell canoe though and not worry about punctures. I did get one once, from a broken bottle in shallow water.
